Newbi - Ray From Costa Rica
Hello All,
I posted an earlier post about finding some fabric for a great kilt. It is not a true tartan, but it is fabric and I can wrap myself up in it to make a great kilt for a good price.
ANY WHO... About me. I am from Texas and I write for a living and my wife does work on the internet. In my spare time you will find me practicing my Iaido (Japanese sword work) as well as FMA Sticks and Espada y Daga.
THEN IT HAPPENED... someone told me to read Outlander, lots of swords, knives and kilts. I did and really enjoyed the first book. It got me to researching my family tree and I have a lot of Irish and Scottish on my mother's side. I found that I come from the Clan Muir, so I have been doing a lot of digging in that area.
Well one thing led to another and now I have included working with the Scottish sword system and just purchased a basket hilt sword.

Ok this is not a Scottish broadsword, but I also do a lot of what is called "back yard cutting" and this was rated very high to stand up against good cutting targets.
I will be picking this up in November and can't wait.
I will be also picking up my kilts and such in November when we return.
I have always loved my Scottish background and always had a heart for Scotland even when I was a kid.
Now that I am older, I can indulge in that and enjoy living my Scottish dream here in the rain forests of Costa Rica.
I write and blog for a living, mostly about survival.
I look forward to learning more about kilts, especially how I might be able to make my own modern kilt seeing that there are not many kilt stores down here in Costa Rica.
Thanks for reading and thanks for the input, I appreciate it.
Sláinte

Hello y bienvenido a nuestro comunidad! I am in Alabama, but from Scottis and German stock by way of Texas. I have been to Costa Rica twice and love it! I have one kilt so far and it is a possible option for you there. I wear a Utilikilt. It has pockets and is made of a heavy Carhartt type material. Very tough and my choice for hiking and many outdoors activities. I had good luck using the online measuring instructions and ordering it, since there isnt a store anywhere near here. As an example of toughness, I rolled a 4-wheeler while wearing it, and tore some muscles and a tendon. Not a loose thread on the kilt, though, and nothing came out of the snapped closed pockets or the open ones. Might be a good option instead of wool in Costa Rica.

Hola Offkiltercowboy -- I now have 4 kilts, just bought another from ebay used that I could not pass up. I have a UTK Blacked out delux black ulitikilt, a hamilton 5 yrd, a stillwater 8yrd Black watch and I just bout a UTK OD Green deluxe.
None of them have I worn yet. I am buying all in a 40 and working to lose weight. I am a 42 right now. So need to drop a few more lbs.
I am looking forward to the utility kilts. The Black watch 8yd will be my sunday go to meeting kilt. I got a fly plaid with that.
I may pick up some fabric so that I can make some more down here and I have been looking at some fabric so that I can wrap myself up in a great kilt.
I am coming back to Texas in Nov and I can not wait .
