T-Shirts with kilts - to tuck or not to tuck ?

Is there a preference to tucking your t-shirt in or not when dressed in casual kilt style ?

I did at first and still do on very rare occasion but in general I can't be bothered. I never tucked in a t shirt with shorts or pants either.

Since T shirts are quite non traditional with kilts or anything else, I think you make your own norms.

With a modern utility style kilt with a pants waist I tend to go untucked as that's how I wear one with jeans, with a natural waisted tartan kilt I am always tucked, I wear a sporran with my traditional kilts and having a t shirt hanging down to the top of my sporran to my eyes looks a bit disheveled.

For me, polos are usually tucked but t-shirts are either way.

It all depends on the activity for me. I usually tuck my t-shirt in though.

Tasty Rabbit, I have seen both tucked in and out.. I think it looks good either way..A dress shirt I would say tuck it in..A T or a Polo/collar shirt can do both..I don't tuck my T in for one reason they are cotton/spandex mix that are form fitting which I like, but still has give not to be tight. My husband doesn't tuck in his T in shorts ('still working on him wearing a kilt ) Wear them how u would with shorts or pants.. Experiment w the shirts.. Good luck ... Angie

I almost always tuck it in. It keeps my skin oils, sweat and dead skin cells off of the kilt at the only place it is in firm contact with the skin. Its a lot easier to clean the shirt.

Un-tucking when you are too warm is the worst time for the kilt. You are sweat wetting and weakening those load bearing threads and fabric above the fell while they are under stress. Even silk and polyester, what aren't weakened by water, will be permanently weakened by the increased skin oil production when you are hot. When the salty sweat dries, it leaves tiny sharp salt crystals in the threads that will cut at the fibers of thread and fabric under motion and stress if not washed out.

This comes down to damage control more than a fashion choice here.
I always wear a properly tanned belt so that my kilt can be warn looser ( under less stress ) in this critical area.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Tucked.... always tucked no matter what I am wearing. I am fully on board with tundramanq about helping to keep you kilt clean, but also, untucked a t-shirt hides the fell, which is an important and identifying element of the kilt. I also usually wear a sporran and that probably has some influence.

I wear a tshirt with my kilt on occasion and prefer the tucked-in look. I never tuck with shorts and only sometimes with jeans (when I have things on my belt I need access to).
