Note the doubled buckle... looks like somebody added one to make the kilt fit a smaller waist (the reverse pleat is overlapped a bit the way the kilt is currently buckled).

I've been sitting on the first whilst I try to track it down but have had no luck. The cloth looks like a good heavy worsted and the colours are quite Wilsons' like. I suspect that this was done either as a special order, or was a new, specific, design. It might well have been woven by Georffray Tailors's looms.

The second one appears to be more of a trade fancy type sett. I note that the photo details say 'Algean' so perhaps it's one of their 'house patterns'.

thanks! Yes the upper one was a well-made traditional-looking kilt by Geoffrey Tailor being sold on Ebay.

The lower one is an Algean skirt so I didn't necessarily expect a 'real tartan' but I find that design attractive.

What is odd, from a tartan perspective, is the way the red and yellow blend into each other. Would this be an example of marled?
Not really a tartan in my view because of that.

Thanks for pointing that out, it's interesting. Since the photo is blurry I can't tell if there's a 'fade' or 'blend' or if it's a case of two adjacent colours being close enough to each other to suggest that effect (I've seen it happen in other tartans).

BTW the top kilt, in the green/white tartan, is still up on Ebay as of today.
