What's your favourite jacket?

I am not thinking of Prince Charlie versus Argyle, more casual really.

Do you like to wear a leather 'bomber' jacket, or a fleece style jacket. What look do you like?

I ask because I'm thinking of buying a leather jacket, it could cost 2 kilts tho!

Graham, a leather jacket is great for the cold weather. I wear one all the time in the winter. During the warmer weather when just a light jacket is enough I like my BDU jacket. There's a pic in my gallery of me wearing my leather jacket and a denim kilt.

I usually use a good jumper of plain colour (knitted by Her-indoors.) I do also have a bottle green Landrover fleece jacket which goes well with my modern Gunn

When it's cold, I usually wear an Arran sweater, or a sage-coloured sweater from Woolrich with my kilt.

I have been known to wear my Barn Jacket, which is similar to a Barbour jacket, with my kilt -- both L.L. Bean and Woolrich sell versions of the barn jacket. (I am a L.L. Bean & Woolrich "junkie"!)

i usualy wear my leather biker jacket when it gets realy cold but other than that i wear my independant brand of bomber style jacket.

if you do get a leather jacket then i suggest getting it with thinsilate linning it is realy warm in the winter.

short story about thinsilate i wear my biker jacket in the winter and i would drive home from work in 10-30 degree weather feranhite with the windows down on my car and the heat off and was comfertable.

short story 2 i wore it and stood outside smoking a cigar at about 10-20 degrees farenhite with a fairly heavy wind and was shivering but my chest was warm when i went inside

Graham, I usually wear my 14 year old black leather jacket. It's a bomber style. No lining, but, even when it's cold, if I add a Polartec sweatshirt, I'm burning up... Even when it's around 20 deg F. Other times, I either wear a down vest, or a down parka (if it's really wet or really cold). In cold weather, I try to wear a kilt as much as possible. Need the heat provided by the wool.

In the Dallas area you really can get by in the winter without a jacket if you 'layer'. I generally will do a tee shirt or thermal then ranging from light long sleeve shirt to a lined shirt.

When it gets bad I have an old 'Tuffy' jacket I had at the PD. They are great because they are short like an Eisenhower jacket (above belt level) or bomber jacket but poyl exterior.

I favour bomber-style leather jackets in the winter, or a chunky sweater when it's not quite so cold (and I have no need of pockets!) I have two brown 'bombers' but am sort-of looking for a black one now. However, as you say, they cost the equivalent of two kilts!!

The secret of maintaining the visual 'balance' I am always going on about, is to ensure the jacket you wear with a kilt is absolutely no longer than hip length. You will be aware that the traditional formal and semi-formal kilt jackets are styled to that length. Anything longer simply looks wrong and also impedes the swing of the pleats - something no kilt-wearer wants! I really do not think you can do better than go for a 'bomber'.

Thanks lads, thanks Hamish too, I agree with you about the 'balance' idea. I kind feel that wearing a kilt is taking on a responsibility to wear it correctly, and I don't mean formally, but balanced style/colour/fabrics etc, you know what I mean.

The only thing I wear that comes below the waist is a raincoat when hiking (Oh and that awful grey dustcoat).

I'm leaning towards a leather jacket like this one, trouble is, my wife is saying I just want to look like "Duncan", why would she say such a thing?

I also have a brown bomber and love it. It has an elstisized waist that just covers that top 3 inches of the kilt. Zippered front with a short weather flap to cover that. Lots of pockets. Very windproof. It's the warmest jacket I own.
