Lidl to sell kilts across its UK stores for Burns Night
I wonder if this will lead to saturation of poor quality kilts. "German discount supermarket Lidl will be selling kilts for under £30 this month in honour of Burns Night."

I think it will encourage people to get them, maybe for their kids, and people may well want something better later on. I wonder how well they will sell outside Scotland - Northern Ireland should go well and there are plenty of Scots living all round the UK.
Although I have been dissuaded from wearing ghillie brogues, mine were £15 in Lidl were very good value.

There are two tartans shown in the pics. Obviously the 2nd one is Black Watch. Does anyone recognise the other one? For that matter, does anyone know which ones they are selling? I assume they have more than two? Just curious, as I no longer live in the UK.

Ah yes Hamilton Grey...
It's interesting to watch as various fashion trends come and go regarding Kilt Hire in Scotland.
At one time, what? around a decade ago, Flower Of Scotland with its soft blues and greens was the most popular hire tartan AFAIK.
Then tartans with purple took over especially Isle Of Skye (they even had IOS silk wedding dresses).
Then there was a rage for grey tartans, not quite over yet, like Hamilton Grey and Highland Granite etc etc.
Douglas has been huge the last few years.
What will be next I wonder?

Maybe yellows and bright colours like McCleoud or Buchannan

John Carrick may be on to something (not unproven by other venders.) Baby steps to better quality kilts may be the long term response. Then they will surely seek the XMARKS out for information.

'Am personally happy to hear of "junque" quality kilts being sold by the boatload and smile each summer in Chicago when the Highland Festival vendors sell gobs and gobs of inexpensive kilts.
As a veteran guitar and bass picker, the analogy is there, for the "hook." Go ahead, buy a cheap guitar and (some % WILL) realize shortly thereafter two things:
(1) you REAALLLY like playing / learning the guitar / guitar culture
(2) the guitar you just bought is nothing but a weak "gateway drug;" you GOTTA have the real thing!
So may it be for many "cheap kilties" purchasing their first, for a Burns Night at a local pub with a pint and platter of bangers and mash.
Next year, wool kilt, Talisker and haggis....

As last year the offer was only in Scotland and this year it is in England too, perhaps UK wide availability is something they are working up to.
