I don't go to the mountains; I go to an empty parking lot, hopefully behind a building when I practice a new tune or break in new reeds. But, I've become only an occasional piper now. I no longer compete. Hard to scrounge the time to practice, and I have developed arthritis in my hands. The A-birl is almost done for.

The best piping I ever remember was the Highland games in the NC mountains in the 1960's. The pipers would practice in the dells and the music would waif through the mist. A parking lot and the reverb off buildings would seem so like that memory from my youth. I would naturally hunt for the source. Go to the mountains when you can and pipe to the wind.

Every Sunday morning my cousin pipes on the rocks beside the lake at their 'cottage' home, no matter what the weather. The neighbours love it and come to check if he misses. They had to let everyone know when the went to visit a new grandchild to save people from making the trek around the lake.

When I was in high school (16-17 yrs old or so), most kids my age played rap and hip on car stereos that would shake the ground. Instead, I played pipes and drums CDs as loud as I could. Never learned to play, but the music is quite fascinating. Ewan Mcgregor is an awesome actor. I like him even more now.
    Thanks for sharing,
