    Bah! how to pick

Bah, I put in some over time at work and got up the cash flow to get another kilt, but now how do I decide what kilt maker to go with and what tartan. I have been wanting to get a Marine Corps Tartan, but the couple places that carry the tartan are well over my 300$ limit this is bad i can't decide.

Oh, what a terrible spot you're in! :P I don't have any problems like that. Aren't I lucky.

    Miah,

Put all the kilts and their makers within the price range you like on a piece of paper, in a hat and go with the one you pulled out. Just hope that it is not 6&7/8

Isn't it wonderful to have all the options we have?

The Marine Corps Tartan is NOT made by numerous mills like so many other tartans are. It's much like the Irish National Tartan in that, it's poopular, it's beautiful, and it's protected by the fact that the mill that produces it can charge whatever they want.

Those companies that HAVE the tartan (and are willing to make it into a kilt) are actually taking the gamble that they can sell it. They're putting-up the funds to acquire the tartan, and are spending more on it than other tartans.

If your heart's set on the Marine Corps Tartan, you'll need to work some more overtime and be patient. Sometimes, those things are the most charished.

Yeah that is what i am finding but I was able to find a 5 yard "hillwalker" kilt for 250$ US
I may go with that for now and get that Tartan under my belt. and then wait till next go round for a full 8 yard. all those pleats yummie.... well the only problem i have i think is that when i order stuff i want it them not in 2 months hehehe, I am so bad about that but i am sure waiting for it will be well worth it.

Use the Nostradamus technique, all the kiltmakers on little bits of paper, then all the tartans, throw them all in the air and when one lands on the other you'll have the tartan and the kiltmaker!

Seriously, for me it's what I like and what is meaningful to me in a tartan.
For kiltmakers, that's harder, service, quality and price.
Generally too in business, I like to deal with people who make it easy to pay.

Miah, I think Jimmy is right on this one. If what you want is a Marine tartan kilt then you're not going to be satisfied with anythikng else. It's like craving chocolate but not having any so you eat some chips, a glass of milk, some gummy bears etc. etc. but you still want the chocolate.

Miah, save a little longer and go for the Corps tartan. You'll be happier in the long run.

Go with your gut on this! If you feel the Marine Corps Tartan is the one you want to be the 'center' of your collect (I say this because anyone that wears a kilt on a regular basis doesn't have just one) then wait just a little longer and go for it. I still have and cherish the first kilt I got 20 years ago. It was $400.00 then and I had to wait for it a while! I don't wear it because of 20 years worth of pounds but I still pull it out and admire it on a regular occassion and it's pure quality and still looks as good as the day I got it.

    Just another view point.

For my two cents, I'd say to wait and save up for the full 8-yard Marine Corps kilt, if that's what you really want. If you get the 4 yarder now, will you really want to get another later in the same tartan? I know I wouldn't. I'd rather have a new kilt in a new tartan, and just make do with the 4 yarder.
