Help needed with dating a goat hair sporran with Scottish silver markings.
Greetings from the North of England.
I have recently acquired a number of pieces from an evening dress set , comprising of Argyle jacket, Tam o'Shanter, belted fly plaid, goats hair sporran with silver chain, a day sporran, tartan breeches, sgian-dudh with silver detailing, a white metal broach with thistle and Celtic motif centred on an orange paste stone.
I was wondering if anyone was able to help me with dating this chain. I am also looking for the silver markings.
I've learnt that it is Scottish Silver (Thistle) - Edinburgh (Castle) & (F) ? - There is also a letter R.&P. - I gather this is the makers name?
Should anyone be able to help me date this I would be very grateful. I am also willing to share other pieces with anyone who cares to see. (I estimate circa. 1930-1950) - Tartan - MacGregor.
All the best,
Gillan Bell (3/4 Scots)

Since many of us can not visit and examine the pieces in person, therefore photos help. Close ups (if possible) will guide us in the right direction to identify the items.

Hi there .
I did upload 4 images to the message . For some strange reason they have failed to upload ? May this be due to being a 'Newbie'? I understand posts go under review to avoid spam.
The photos are visible via the paper clip icon ( previous page) along side if my thread . If you click on this icon the photos become viable .
In the mean time I will ask the moderator for a quick fix.
Regards . Gil

Is the "F" in an oval or shield? Assuming it is actually a capital "F"? From memory, if the "F" is in an oval stamp the date is 1862 and if the "F" is in a shield stamp then its 1911.

Did you try uploading your pictures directly? I have my best luck that way.
Click on the "picture" icon at the top of where you're making your post,
Then "browse" to the photo on your computer and click on it, then click "upload" and voila!
Should work.

Thank you for the quick response regarding the stamps - I can confirm the 'F' is within a shield.
- I will keep note of the 'Insert Image' icon for future posts. Cheers, Bill !
Attached is a further 3 images. I was wondering if should pieces were of any value?
Warm Regards.

Images - Take 2
Hi.
It seems the files exceeded the size limit required. Hopefully these should upload with no issues. (Note - The goat hair is + 5 inches in length - Sadly the bottom of the image was cut away during cropping)
Regards, Gillan.
