    Kilt at South Pole

    http://m.heraldscotland.com/news/142...he_South_Pole/

...And my first thought was "what tartan is that?"

Must have been a bit chilly while the photo was being taken.

What a pity that he travelled all that way, whilst doing good work and then put the kilt on backwards, and has a picture to prove it!

I too saw that his kilt has the pleats in front. The wind would not pass through the aprons as quickly while he skied, if the pleats were in front. That may be the reason, as the article describes the wind on his trek.

Fashion mistakes made in ignorance are temporary and forgivable, once. Unfortunately internet photos and ridicule last forever.

I didn't see where he skied in the kilt. I suspect he put it on for the photo op.

Good point cck. I did assume that he skied because of the poles from the first photo and the text stating he pulled his sled behind during the trek. That is done faster and easier with skis instead of snowshoes.

However, could be just a promotion photo for bragging rights.

The skiing I can understand, the kilting is questionable. Kilts may be warm, but the average high temperature at the South Pole in January (summer) is -15F. The few times I was exposed to temperatures like that I wanted every part of my body totally covered with multiple layers. The trek was admirable, the photo was interesting, and he had a 50/50 chance of getting the kilt on properly.

Mostafa Salameh claims to be a resident of Scotland, which makes putting the kilt on backwards harder for me to understand. Are kilts so rare even in Edinburgh that one would have never seen them worn properly?

Edited to add: Mr. Salameh studied at Edinburgh University, and a quick google image search shows several pictures of students wearing kilts in formal occasions.
