What would you do... what would YOU do?
Okay. With all the "what kilt should I buy" threads going around, let's get to the bottom line on the responses. Remember, there's a lot of browsers and first-time kilters who aren't about to spend $500 on a kilt. Here's a realistic scenario that you can answer to, that will explain a LOAD about your feelings on kilts, and help them to form an educated decision.
You have $150 USD at your disposal for a kilt purchase. There's no real time frame for the need, but you would like to have a quality-sewn, and a nice-fabric kilt. There's no dependance on Tartan or Plain, Wool or other, domestic or import, Beavis or Butthead. All you want is a GOOD kilt at the price that you can afford.
You MAY need to hit the kiltmaking sites to compare before you post a final answer, Regis.
1).Who makes it?
2).Tartan or plain?
3).Fabric preference?
4).Any specific reason for your choice?
~~~Let's try NOT to go off on tangents so that comparison shoppers and interested parties can use this thread as an informative base to help them.
~~~If you need to go into further detail on the craftsmanship, pricing, tartans, materials, etc... please start a thread under THAT manufacturer's own section. Thanks guys!

For $150 US I would go for a Bear Kilt 4-yard clan tartan poly/viscose kilt.
I have had the opportunity to see a few samples of other poly/viscose kilts from other companies, and I can honestly say that I find Bear's craftsmanship and attention to detail unparralled. I like the clan tartans because they have just a bit more weight to them, however the Canadian tartans are perfect for the warmer months.
I would prefer the 8 yard, but $150 US just won't get me there.

Ok, we're limiting it to $150.
1) kingkilts, Bearkilts or USA Kilts
2) Tartan. I just like tartan better than plain.
3) PV for or poly/rayon for ease of care and cleaning.
4) The reasons are, first, the dollar limit followed by ease of care and practicality. Cotton tends to crease and wrinkle easily.

For me at that price point there is only one choice and it was a decision made long ago...USA Kilts...Victory..in green..because it meets my requirements.

I would get another Pittsburgh Kilt in the 13 oz brushed cotton. Not sure about the color, but it would be an earthy solid. I have a pair of tartan type kilts on order from Bear. Otherwise, I would probably order a 4 yard Forbes tartan.

Jimmy,
How can you do this to a guy. First you get me into the idea of buying a more formal and expensive kilt. Now I have to limit myself to 150 USD.
This is torture.

1). Bear or USAK
2). Tartan
3). For the Price you only really have cotton or PV. So PV it is.
4). Not enough funds for an 8 yard Wool Trad kilt
I like playing this game...Can I have some more money next time

1. Bear and USA kilts are at the top of my list at this time.
2. Leaning toward tartan at this juncture
3. P/V because it is easy to care for with little hassle
4. Saving my purchase of an 8yd wool because not sure which one I want and from where.
These are as of now my priorities, who is to say what tomorrow may bring.

I avoid the heavily red tartans. They look pretty dumb on me. They're fine for the thin guys but us fat guys look like a half unwrapped Christmas package. <G>
