Hey Rocky, a Kilt Care Question. (Say that three times fast)

I am posting this here rather than in email because it might be informative.

I noticed that the Highland Gray tartan I was looking at is made from a wool rayon blend. How does one wash that? Dry clean? Washer on cold cycle? And your wool kilts? What about cotton polys? I have read about the PV kilts... But your page has a few different blends.

Which kilts have the least need of ironing? I am guessing PV, but, could be wrong.

Any and all garmet care answers from anybody would be wonderful!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Dr. D,

Good question! Here are some care instructions for you. Hope these help.

PV... Wash cold / Hang Dry. Doesn't NEED Ironing, but it looks much nicer if it is ironed.

Wool / wool blends... Dry Cleaning. Rather be safe than sorry.

Cotton Poly... Wash cold / Hang Dry. NEEDS Ironing every time you wash. Hate to Iron? Get a Philabeg (sewn in pleats).

    Which need the least Ironing...

Which Model? Philabeg. Which Material? Poly Vis. Example... I have Traditionals made from PV. When I wash them, I don't HAVE to iron them (if I'm in a rush). I would recommend taking the time to iron them though, as it "flattens them out" and takes out the wrinkles. The Philabeg "evolved" b/c I hated to iron. I sewed in the pleats on the very edge so they stayed nice and crisp even in the washer. Ironing a Philabeg (especially one in Cotton Poly) is made MUCH easier b/c you don't have to be precise and line up the edge of the stripe in the tartan and carefully press it... the edge is SEWN IN! This is truly the "lazy man's knock around" kilt.

I hope these helped clear some things up!

I don't even own an ironing board, and the iron is kinda messy cause it was used to make grilled cheese sammiches.

Good to know about the wool. I wont be getting the Highland Gray. I can not afford constant dry cleaning.

I have every intention of getting a Philabeg for my first kilt, as it is the right mix of price and looks. That, and I don't iron anything. I am a let it do as it will sort of guy.

Don't know why, but I am liking McAnarchist and Pagan Holiday. I believe both of those are cotton polys.

Rocky, any personal recommendations? Or tartans I don't know about stashed away in PV?

The Pagan Holiday and McAnarchist are very "Strong" tartans... I REALLY like them and so do a lot of our customers. If you like a "red and black" type color scheme, then you really can't go wrong. The ONLY thing I'd warn you against... If your waist is over a 44 or so... they are SMALLER squares (smaller repeat inthe pattern). You may want to look at a pattern with a bigger repeat... Wallace?

Here are the new tartans that WILL be coming out on the site soon:

    Red (aka Royal) Stewart
    Clark (Blue white and black)
Caledonia (red, blue, yellow, etc... very colorful)
Thompson Camel (tan and black with red stripes)
    MacNaughten (maroon and drk green)
Robertson (red and drk green/drk blue)
Campbell (like blackwatch with red and blue stripes)
    MacQueen (black and red)
Gordon Dress (same as on site but in PV)

Hope this helps to confuse your already big decision! hahahaha

Rocky, any idea if you are going to be able to get Ancient Campbell in PV?

Oh Lord! If I got a Campbell my family would disown me at the very least!

Waist is an even 50... (Sheesh) If it helps, my chest is a 58. I am triangular. Hrm.

Now splain the repeat. I am lost here. If I ordered a McAnarchist or a Pagan Holiday, what exactly would be the nature of the problem? To many repeats? Tiny tartans don't look right on satchsqatches? This is something I know nothing about and would be curious to find out the exact nature of the problem.

Sorry guys, Campbell on Mother's side and sept of Gunn on father's side...I've got the Gunn now trying for ancient Campbell. I do have one of the Dress Campbell's that Rocky sold but I'm trying to 'fill out' the collection.

    A MacGregor wearing a Campbell. I don't think so.
