Thoughts on choosing new tweed jacket and hose (for Farquharson kilt)

    Hi all,

I am getting married next year and I am after opinions on a new tweed jacket and hose for the day. Previously I've only ever worn my kilts with black PC's and Argyll jackets, so not really sure which direction to go with the tweed and hose.

The kilt I'll be wearing on the day is my Grandads Farquharson modern. At this stage I'm leaning towards a tweed called Ocean & Petrel from Marton Mills (picture below). I had thought originally of getting something a little lighter along a lovat blue but not sure it would go as well with my other kilt which is quite a rich blue. Failing that I could go a grey tweed.

Hose have got me completely stumped as I can quite get the picture in my head what different colours would look like and what would work with the kilt and jacket.

Any help and comment greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Dave

I think you are in danger of overthinking all this, which is not in the least bit surprising if you are not used to wearing Highland attire in many and various situations. Try to avoid getting too wound up about colours matching, it is the traditional course of action not to bother overly much and somewhat amazingly, it works!

So from a traditional point of view and if we use my tartan, MacLeod of Harris which is not dis-similar to your tartan as an example, then various shades of green tweed is a good option for a kilt jacket. Mine has served me well for many kinds of events including weddings for well over twenty years. Brown is also worth a thought too. You may be interested in knowing that your Clan Chief is often seen clad in a brown tweed kilt jacket and some startlingly loud coloured hose too.

Perhaps it is best to avoid some of the more loud tweed patterns for a general purpose kilt jacket and I think that blue in abundance is also best avoided, for tweed day jackets too.

As to hose, well any colour you like, other than white,(this statement may cause this website to melt down!) will work well with your tartan, but if I had to pick two specific colours, they would be claret and bottle green. However various shades of yellows, reds and greens are safe bets too.

Might I also suggest that you could rid yourself of those dreadful ghillie brogues too. You will find a pair of black brogues(wingtips, I think you call them over there) or even black oxfords will set off your kilt attire to best advantage.

I agree with Jock. Bypass the blue tweed in favor of a lovat green, olive, or brown tweed.

I have a mid-brown keeper's tweed jacket with a subtle burnt orange windowpane that compliments every kilt I own. Also, you might find yourself wanting a kilt in the Weathered color scheme. The previous choices would look great with that.

Building on what others have said I would veer towards a brown tweed, they really do work with most any tartan. As Jock said don't worry so much about matching it really should not be the concern that it is. Here is a jacket and waistcoat that I thought of right away that I think would work wonderfully with both tartans you've shown and a myriad of others.

As for hose colour my first choice would be claret, green, either lovat or bottle would work in my opinion, the same goes with blue, you could go with either lovat blue or navy or St. Andrews.

No fashion advice here, but I did want to say you and your fiancee make a very good-looking and happy couple, so congratulations on your forthcoming nuptials! I'd also like to express my appreciation for your being able to wear your Grandad's kilt. Weddings, like (unfortunately) funerals, are all about family and you must be very proud to wear what sounds like a family heirloom. Slainte!

If you're looking for something in the darker tones I wear a waistcoat from USA Kilt in brown. They list it as LM Kirk 564. It has a subtle blue window pane pattern. I wear it with Anderson Modern, Irish National, Gordon Modern and a tartan of my own design and it looks great with all them. I still haven't mastered putting pictures on here but you can see the material on Rocky's site.
