    Question Leather kilt question

So i got this awesome leather kilt made from badassness and testosterone and I'm wearing it to a hipsterific New Years party. its black and bullet proof. Im at odds with what to wear with it. Was thinking either a t-shirt (Star Wars of course), my schott leather biker jacket or even a leather peacoat. Of course i don't need to wear top to bottom celtic biker leatheriness and I'm open to opinions.

I suppose it would matter if the party is biker or hipsterific. People do tend to dress to the crowd; not cookie cutter, but not out of place

Wear a plaid lumberjack shirt, untucked, docs with scrunched down hose.

I don't wear my black leather kilt often, but when I do it's usually in cold or at least cooler weather, and I opt for a Don't-Mess-With-Me/Black-On-Black look: black casual shirt, or black sweater/jumper (a turtle neck or heavy weight cable-knit fishing sweater, commando sweater, etc.), black kilt hose, chunky black shoes with a thick and/or aggressive lugged tread pattern sole, and big, masculine chromed and/or polished nickel/steel accessories including a big shiny kilt buckle, and of course a serious skian dhu and a Go-To-Hell sporran, e.g. one with a full mask if you have it, or in my case a skunk sporran with the full tail AND a pearl-handle skinning knife with built-in sheath attached. It's a leather kilt--you can go for a rustic/shooting party look if it's a weekend in the country with your favorite gun dog if that's where you'll be, but otherwise: You Gotta Rock It, sort of like this:

You're in Chicago. Will you be outside in the harsh elements for any length of time? If so wear a Navy/Pea coat over any warmer shirt you choose for inside activities. I do like the lumberjack plaid idea Canuck recommends. DyerStraits is a snappy gent and his ideas are usually spot on also.

I agree with DyerStraits, regarding the monochrome look with chrome or stainless accents, though I also like the flannel shirt, scrunched socks, and jump-boots look.

I've seen DyerStraits in his leather kilt, very sharply dressed and not overdone.

One pitfall I can see with a leather kilt is it seems too easy to play into the over the top style of it and wind up looking like an extra in a movie like 'blade'

This, so much. It's really easy to go way overboard, or look like you're going to a leather bar, if you don't really understand what you're putting on. Some photos I've seen are just tragic. There's a bit of advice that's been repeated here many times and that's to get dressed as if you were wearing pants, then add the kilt. I think that holds especially true in the case of a leather kilt. Keep it simple and don't try too hard. The kilt will be plenty flash on it's own.

If movie-extra-over-the-top is the look you're going for then disregard this advice and knock yourself out. I'd go 20 eye boots, preferably steel toed, leather peacoat or similar, fitted pullover shirt, and definitely a wide, thick belt. A long, chunky scarf would probably be a nice touch too. All of it none-more-black of course. It might go over like a lead balloon, or everyone at the party will want to take you home. Hipsters are a strange and unpredictable bunch so it's hard to say.
