    Blazer Question

    OK Folks,

I have a question about blazers. I have a very nice navy blue wool blazer that I purchased 20+ years ago. That with a pair of tan slacks, button-down shirt and a tie make up what I refer to as my architect uniform. This is alo the cloest thing to a dressy coat that I currently own. I am thinking about tailoring it to work with the kilt and I was wondering what folks think about wearing a coat, jacket or blazer that is cut for kilt wear with trousers. Any words of advice?

    Thanks,
    Christoph

    Don't think that will work...

Kilt jackets are necessarily cut shorter than Saxon jackets.

Unless you're planning to wear your kilt-cut jacket with high-waisted trews or some such, I don't think it'll work.

You'd be better off purchasing a kilt jacket for use with your kilt and leaving your sport jacket as is.

    Cheers,

I guess it is time to work up a pattern, pull out the tweed and/or the charcoal flannel and make a new coat/jacket. I was afraid of that but what can you do?

Either that or start haunting the second hand stores looking for the right coat in the right size (50 portly).

    Thanks,
    Christoph

I had a lovely wool Italian "sports coat" that had grown too small for me cut down into a Kilt coat. It had hung in the closet for more than a couple years but now I am able to wear it anytime I want .....and I do....see my avatar..... You will be amazed at the number of beautiful Harris Tweed jackets that are in Thrift shops and other shops of that kind......trying to find one for fellows our size, (48 portly) does take some looking but seek and ye shall find as the good book says

If you have the jacket cut to fit your kilt, regular slacks will seem too short for the length of the jacket hem. As Shaun commented, trews or higher waisted pants would work with that cut. Otherwise you'll have to sport a strange "small coat" complex and pull if off with odd or comedic behavior.

This is a good question! I had a favorite Italian tan summer suit in which the trousers finally got too shiny and worn to wear anymore, but the jacket was perfect. I tossed the trousers and had the jacket cut shorter to wear with the kilt during our hot spring/summer/fall seasons. I love it!

I would do exactly what you plan to do with your blue blazer! My preference with such a dark jacket would be to wear it with an ancient tartan, but I'm sure it would still go with just about anything.

As to wearing the kilt-cut jacket with trousers. The answer is a definitive no, unless you wear tartan trews.

I see plenty of young men wearing short jackets (sleeves a bit longer than the hem/tails) with trousers. Always unstructured jackets and usually unlined and unvented, and I don't think I've seen any that would qualify as a traditional blazer. I think they look great as casual, office wear. But it might be a bit trendy for those of us old enough to be President.
Why be normal when you can be yourself?
