A new Kiltie is born

I started my journey to kiltedness around 6 months ago when an uncle asked me to wear a kilt to his sons wedding this year. After lurking for a few months I joined XMarksthescot, since then I have been drinking from the font of knowledge that XMarksthescot is.

I picked up my kilt, jacket and waistcoat yesterday, didn't want a black jacket, so picked grey as compromise between formal and casual. It will work for the wedding and less formal events, have enough different sporrans, shoes, belts and shirts to do that.

Below are a couple of pictures of what I believe will be my most formal dress, picked the grey socks to go with the jacket and tartan flashes ( yeah I know but they were free and a somewhat different style so gave them a try). Sporran has gone askew during the prep stage.

Would like honest opinions, wife says kilt is too short and looks like a mini, but I think the height is about right, any other feedback appreciated.





Got measured up for the kilt after 6 weeks of 2 days a week in the gym which resulted in a loss of 2 inches from my newly discovered kilt waist, great news. Unfortunately the last 4 weeks have resulted in an overall loss of around 8lbs of body weight, probably gained 6 lbs muscle so body has gone through major reshaping. Result of this is that despite having a belly, more muscle than fat now, I think I am going to have to take my kilt in a couple of inches - how tight does a kilt need to be to stay up on a barrel shaped body

I can wear with a belt for now, might be better to wait and see if I lose more weight when I start mountain biking again.

Congratulations, well done. You look pretty good, and the height is fine; it'll slip slightly during the day, but start where it is and on average it'll be at the right height. As far as tension... you'll discover it. Easy to move the belts (congratulations on the weight loss) and you'll find instructions on that all over this site.

I think the hem length is perfect. So many guys wear their kilt so low that there is no knee cap showing at all.

I think the kilt looks great where it is, perfect length as far as I'm concerned. As for the jacket and waistcoat I will say the charcoal grey is a wonderful choice and will see you well sorted for all sorts of events. Well done and congratulations on the kilt.

Aye to everything said. The kilt is at perfect length, right on top of the knee. Overall great outfit, well put together sir! I do like my hose a bit lower, maybe an inch, but that's personal preference.

Thanks for the kind comments, the sporran is a cheap one, Indian eBay thing. It is okay for the infrequent use it will get, courtesy of advice from XMarksthescot the chain which was really rough has been replaced and the leather of the straps have been treated with Picard leather restorer as they were dry and rough.

I also purchased one of the beautifully made leather braided chain straps from rkilts, I may have to purchase another as it is dark brown and may not work with my black hunting sporran.
