Touting bonnets
Gloria, historicalcaps.net , came through once again filling my order this time with a beautiful Scottish bonnet in woad blue. It's now a shelfmate with a natural gray tam she stitched together for me a couple of years ago. It's a difficult decision deciding which to top off with. Both are tougher than a herd of Highland Cattle, shed rain like a fresh thatched roof, and block wind like a granite wall. If you're looking to top things off with a flair examine the Historical Cap web site.
Gloria made the bonnets for the stars of the Outlander series. I didn't think to ask her about them, but I noted one background bonnet in the series was obviously pieced together so her's must be only those at center stage. Doing them all would have been quite a task as she is a lone knitter, only occasionally requiring help.
I've engaged Gloria to needle me another. It to be in screaming orange to wear when engaged in the chase. Perhaps pics of all three soon.

I have three from her, myself. Top notch. Almost went with the woad, but chose the light blue at last minute. Light grey and dark grey round it out, the dark grey being my favorite.

James, if you feel the need to discard the blue (it being neglected on the shelf) PM me. I have admired those bonnets for some time now.

I have two Jacobit, light blue and dark blue, both fit perfect, great workmanship, and top materials, you cannot find many bonnets of better quality. Love her work, very prompt, and each made for that person. EXCELLENT Vendor

Unless wires were crossed my woad bonnet is a light blue, sky blue or UN blue. The grey tam 'o Shanter is natural herdwick sheep grey. It is scratchy, but it doesn't bother me much once it's been ona bit. I've worn it in hot weather without issue. The new bonnet is a finer wool and quite comfortable. The only thing less itchy are the soft wool berets from South Pacific Berets, which are nowhere near as bomb proof as a Historical Cap. Some of these berets make acceptable Scotch bonnets. Kilters interested in being traditional or historically accurate should consider buying from Gloria before buying modern styles such as a Mackie.

It's an interesting marketing ploy but there is no such colour as woad blue, as opposed to blue dyed with woad.
The lighter blue of these bonnets is merely a result of less dyestuff being used but any shade of blue is possible from woad as it is from true Indigo.
