A kilter lost

Some of you here know my father, username Jerry.

I wanted to let the forum know that on Saturday March 3, he passed from this world. He had posted of his battle with breast cancer, which ultimately claimed him from us. He was proud of his Scottish heritage (clan MacNeil) and loved attending the games and festivals all around our area.

For those in Virginia, will be holding a memorial for family and friends on Saturday March 17, at 10am, at

R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks

This is very sad news to learn. My deepest condolences to you, your mother and all the family. I have very fond memories of Jerry in meeting up with him and your mother at the various Scottish games and festivals held in Virginia. I will miss his presence.

For several years Jerry and I had a ritual at the Richmond Scottish Games. There was a vendor there who sold Irish coffees. Jerry and I would go up to him and order Irish coffee and add, hold the cream and the coffee. The vendor would oblige with a good pour of Tullamore Dew. Tonight, I lift a glass of Tullamore Dew to Jerry, farewell my friend.

Thanks to all for the thoughts and kind words. My father meant a great deal to me, cancer is quite a vile thing indeed.

None the less, we got 6 years after a stage 4 diagnosis, and I'm thankful for every second of it. He got to know 2 grandchildren, something his own father missed out on. He turned 75 on Feb 28, and spent that Friday, March 2 surrounded by family and friends in celebration. He was not feeling well, but was smiling and laughing while his granddaughters played. He blew out the candles on his cake, had some pizza from his favorite restaurant and tapped his feet while listening to Willie Nelson. My sister and I helped him into bed before heading out and we told told him we loved him, not knowing it would be our last conversation.

Again, thank you all. He loved the kilt community, the festivals will certainly be a touch less joyous for our family, but good memories abound.

Ern, I'll have to track you down at the next Richmond Games for a swig from the flask in his honor. I'm easy to spot, 6'3", shaved head, and look just like him.
