Clan Banners (again)
Resurrecting an old thread, can someone provide a link to "The article" by Lady Saltoun?
"Some clans will have a banner hanging from their tent with the words "Clan Whatever" to allow visitors to clan row to identify "their" clan tent, as well as a more formal banner as Lady Saltoun describes in her article.
While I see the need for a compromise to allow folks to more easily identify their clan, I still prefer the recommendations of Lady Saltoun's article, which conform to Highland custom -- if we're going to "play Highlander", we should at least pay some heed to it." - from the old Clan Banners thread.
Thanks!

This, perhaps . . . http://www.fraserchief.co.uk/heraldry.html . . . which says:
Flags
At Highland Games wherever they may take place, where other Clans are present, it is proper to display flags which show the Clan Fraser Clansmen's Crest Badge, comprising the Chief's Crest with a strap and buckle inscribed with the Motto or Slogan, although the name of the Clan should NOT be added, as Clansmen should know their own Crest Badge.
The flag may be either a Banner (flown from a vertical pole attached to one side of it) or a Gonfanon (suspended from a horizontal cross bar along its top edge).
However, it is NOT correct to use the Banner or Gonfanon in the presence of the Chief, only when the Chief is not present.
The Standard may ONLY be used by the Chief, and the standard of a Chief who is a Lord of Parliament should be 5 yrds long.
Any flag bearing the plain arms may only be used by the Chief.
The Pinsel is a flag used to denote a person to whom the Chief has delegated authority to represent him on a particular occasion. It should be 4'6" long and 2' high.

Gonfanon

We put a big sign on our tent that says "CLAN BUCHANAN" pretty much covers the whole identifying the tent issue. Well that and all the yards of our amazingly bold and bright Buchanan tartan found inside.

Perhaps relevant to the discussion, this is a pic of the chiefs' banners at the 2009 re-signing of the 1609 Band of Union of the Clan Chattan. In the foreground, left, is the banner of the Captain of the Clan Chattan, under permit by the absent Macgillichattan Mor; behind it is the banner of Mackintosh of Mackintosh; at the right the banner of Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie; behind it is the banner of Maclean of Dochgarroch; centre is McBain of McBain; hidden to its left is Farquharson of Invercauld. In the background are the chiefs whose banners are carried before.
Macthomas of Finegand and Davidson of Davidston were not present, so neither were their banners.
