Black Stewart Tartan Kilt

I'm 59 years old and really suck at matching colors.
I'm thinking of purchasing a new kilt in black Stewart.
I have black hose, and shoes, black sporran and belt with pewter buckle.

What color shirts?
Anything to match one of the tartan colors?

You people have really helped me in my quest to go kilted.

I think a good accent shirt color would be pastel blue. If you decide on a tie try maroon or mustard. I just think that combo would look fine together.

No need to match the kilt. Wear white, a tattersall, or a solid color. I'd avoid black, navy, or dark grey, and go with tattersall or a lighter color.

Can I respectfully suggest that you are over-thinking this idea of matching things with kilt attire. It’s not something that traditional kilt wearers in Scotland bother about too much. If anything matches, apart from shoes and hose it’s more by accident than design. There are many excellent threads on the subject lurking in the past posts here, try the search facility that is available here.

I don't bother matching my black Stewart kilt with a shirt, I still have a dozen or so plain white shirts left over from when I used to wear a suit to work...

On the contrary, you seem to be doing an excellent job at matching colours!

In fashion, the name of the game is co-ordinating colours.

Matching tends to make for a less-interesting outfit.

When you get different colours that go together, that co-ordinate (either by design or by accident) it can be quite effective.

Personally I think the main thing for putting together an effective outfit is to avoid repeating the kilt's main ground-colour in the accessories.

Many tartans have several minor colours and picking one of those can work very well. In Black Stewart you have red, yellow, green, and bright blue. (Yes there's white but white is not a colour strictly speaking.)

Off the top of my head I can see a Black Stewart kilt worn with red hose and a Lovat Blue tweed jacket. For me it would be black shoes and a brown sporran. My shirt would be a Tattersall, white or off-white.

Another approach which can make for great-looking outfits is to avoid ALL of the colours of the kilt in the accessories. But with a tartan like Black Stewart that becomes more difficult due to the number of colours in the tartan.

For me, perhaps this jacket, these hose? (The big red hose.)
