    An old poem . . . .

I recently received a small book that had belonged to my late mother in which she had collected a variety of clippings of cartoons, poems, news items, and some hand-written and typed entries. Among them was this old bit of doggerel which many of you may recognize or vaguely remember. I take the liberty of sharing it here to revive your rum-soaked memories.

The horse and mule live thirty years
And nothing know of wine or beer.
The goat and sheep at thirty die
And never know the taste of rye.

The cow drinks water by the ton
And at eighteen is mostly done.
The dog at fifteen cashes in
Without the aid of rum or gin.

The cat in milk and water soaks
And then at twenty years it croaks.
The modest, sober bone dry hen
Lays eggs for nogs, then dies at ten.

    All animals are strictly dry.
They sinless live and swiftly die,
    But sinful, ginful, scotch-soaked men
Survive for three score years and ten...

And some of us, the mighty few,
    Stay pickled 'til we're ninety-two!

    Slainte!

    A man who drinks water
    and goes to bed sober
    will fall like a leaf
    and die in October

    But he who drinks ale
    and goes to bed mellow
    Will live to old age
    and die a good fellow
