As I mentioned previously, I was looking for a vintage SD, and in the process found a very reasonably priced contemporary one made by Alan Wilkie. I've corresponded with Alan a little, and he told me "I used to be the British army sgian dubh maker now I just do this as a hobby" Interestingly, he makes his own blades, and every facet of the knife carries the hallmarks of a completely hand made item. He markets his products on the Ardgowan Distillery website, but currently has several on ebay for $145. The ebay items are a little less fancy than the ones offered on the distillery website. Search "custom made silver sgian dubh with lignum vitea handle" The handle is lignum vitea, the hardware is silver, and the blade is a ferrous (magnetic) metal. I'm very pleased with this knife and I think it will serve well in both casual and formal situations.
