Make an open ended cardboard box the length of the sporran.
Cut a letterbox opening one side where the strap is attached to the sporran.
Lay the box on the table with the opening uppermost.
With the sporran face down, feed in the straps into the box and exit them at the opening.
Pull in the sporran until completely covered and hang by the straps.
This was demonstrated to me by an old ex SG piper and now all my hair sporrans have cases.
Good for travelling with as well though you might be making more than one due to rough usage!!

Either is fine, but protect it from things brushing against it. A long paper bag is good, as it's breathable. If hanging, reinforce a slot at the top with strapping tape to keep it from ripping.
