Cold Snaps

So its turned cold here in the canyonlands. While I'm warm under my kilt the snaps on my UKs are COLD...particularly when they happen to contact my "fire helmet."

Thinking of heading down to WalMarche and betting some of those iron on patches and covering the backside of the snaps within range of my "fire helmet" to avoid sudden grimmacing in public

Any other suggestions or experience...besides wearing a bifurcated garment under the kilt??

Velcro instead of snaps, allows for waist gain or loss.

Off topic a little, but when I was in the navy, the ship I was assigned to was part of the north atlantic fleet. In the combat info center, all of the bulkheads are painted black. However, during the very cold north atlantic winters, the rivets that that went through the bulkheads were always coated with white frost. In the darkened CIC, it looked like stars. I would imagine that the Utilikilts might look the same in extremely cold weather.

Sounds like a good reason to buy a winter kilt. I hear that Bearkilts makes a rather nice 8-yarder in machine-washable poly/viscose.

I was stationed on a DEG, which was a Garcia class Destroyer escort with an ASROC mount, a Tartar missle mount, and one single 5"/54cal naval rifle. I was a RADAR electronics technician. WE were homeported in Rhode Island. I was in the navy from 66 through early 70.

I've seen insulated pot handle covers that might work. Similar to a condom but made of quilted cloth with a string tie. Something like that might work as long as you don't tie it too tight and cut the circulation off. Also it would have to be tied in a bow and not a knot just in case it had to come off quickly. You wouldn't want to be fussing with a knot in an emergency. Hey, one might even be able to find something like this in plaid.
