    substitute sporrans

Hi, whilst I can appreciate the style and good taste of a traditional sporran, for my daily routine regular sporrans just don't fill the bill. I walk everywhere and so when I go out I take a lot of stuff with me. Maybe I am combining shopping with the walk and so there's a wallet with cash and credit cards etc. Then there's a can of dog-spray, (just love dogs but I have been bitten twice), there's sunglasses, maybe some photos to show the guys down at the pub, and on and on. I have recently been thinking of a digital camera case as a substitute sporran. One by Lowepro measures approximately the same size as a regular sporran but has useful compartments and zips on it. I took the plunge and bought what appears to be a leather mens shoulder purse.By cutting off the strap and replacing it with a back-mounted belt of nylon webbing it becomes a sporran. This thing is really at the "top-end" size-wise, it is 7" x 8". A large sporran may look good on the Great Hulk but on a wee guy like me it can look like I am slinging a briefcase up front of my kilt. I figure that I can "Celticize" this thing by perhaps adding a pewter crest or something. You experienced lads oot there are probably ahead of me on this already. Any more ideas? An' dinna tell me aboot backpacks, I carry one o' them tae! Thanks,- Longforgan

Have you checked out the fine sporrans that are made by out own Freelander (Sporrano). The price is out standing, and the sporrans look really cool. Plus other members seem to just love the Sporrans they have gotten from David and Sten.

Some of the guys here just wear "bum bags". I've done it myself a couple of times. Holds alot more and best of all they're cheap.

I admit to being a casual bum bag wearer, they are very practical.

If I'm hiking and need to carry more gear I use a small day pack (backpack.

I hang things off my belt where I can (knife, mobile phone).

I'm like you, there is certain "stuff" I must have before I go out (knife, phone, Palm, reading glasses, money purse) no sporran can take all that without being too bulky (and painful to wear )

Bum bags or "fanny packs" work great (in front, like a sporran). Especially the nice black leather ones.
And you'll have virtually no problem with the dreaded
sporran tummy pooching effect. Especially if you wear it slightly off to one side. They work very nicely with a sarong too. Next time your going for a stroll on the beach in the Bahamas or Florida try it!
(I should be so lucky) LOL......
    Cheers,

    PS...
Wow, I just checked out the link someone
posted above about the Freelander Sporran
and it takes one to a picture of Hamish wearing
his. Great picture Hamish. One of the best I've seen
of you. Love the colors in that outfit man.
    Cheers,

I get requests often about alternate sporrans. Traditional ones just don't seem to fit with my kilts. My answer is to find small plastic "D" rings which open. I then use a small camera bag or small "fanny pack". cuting off the straps, and re-sewing webbing tabs back on with "quick disconnect" buckles. This allows the bag to hang in the right location and quickly come off when not needed.
My favorite is an "Ambassodor" sport model in black ballistic nylon. Not too large but with enough compartments to hold a lot of STUFF.
I guess I should post a pic of my sporran. I'll do that as soon as I get a chance.

    I wear the kilt because:
