No Pockets - What do I do with my hands?

A few weeks ago my wife placed an order with Rocky for my first kilt which I should receive on my birthday in December. One of the questions I have which I haven't seen any reference to is what do those wearing traditional kilts do with their hands? I have a habit when I'm out and about of keeping my hands in my pockets when I'm standing around etc. As kilts usually don't have pockets, the thought struck me -- where do I put my hands?

This may be a silly question to some. But it's a curiosity of mine none-the-less.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Putting your hands in your pockets is a bad habit in my opinion. I usualy have one hand on my sporran (unconsciously) or I stand with both hands behind my back.

    Just my tuppence however
    The hielan' man he wears the kilt, even when it's snowin';
He kens na where the wind comes frae,
But he kens fine where its goin'.

Why do you think Prince Charles clasps hishands behind his back?

I feel ya' on that, I stood around with my thumbs hooked in my jeans pockets for years. These days I just stick them in my sporran strap.

Ha, I was just commenting the other day to someone that it was a different experience in trying to find a good place to put your hands when kilted. Ifeel like a Neanderthal just letting my arms hang limply at my side. So I put them behind my back, or cross my arms over my chest, or put my hands on my hips, or hook my thumbs in my belt.

It is really simple. Put your hands in the pockets of your kilt. That's what I do.

Re: No Pockets - What do I do with my hands?

Awesome question!! In the military we are not allowed to put our hands in our pockets. It is considered poor form. I find that this was ingrained deep within me. I dont put my hands in my pockets ever. Personally, I tend to clasp my hands behind me (similar to Prince Charles as others referenced) or in front if i am standing still.

I am sure you will get more comfortable...or you could order a kilt with pockets and resume putting your hands in your pockets like steve

Re: No Pockets - What do I do with my hands?

If I'm standing around , I often have them sort of clasped behind my back. Sometimes I think I've started having my thumbs tucked into the top of my belt sort of like a kilted-cowboy haha. But I'm usually not standing around in any way for very long.

You could stand with your clenched fists on your hips sort of like Superman

I think Superman should have worn a kilt instead of those red underwear on the outside of some tights but I'm getting off topic

Re: No Pockets - What do I do with my hands?

I agree with Spartan. I was taught by the military many moons ago to keep my hands out of my pockets and to this day stand with my hands clasped behind me. It looks much neater than deep in pockets.
