perhaps better to stay on paper (and on the boundless canvas of our imaginations)than be ruined by a poor film version?

Agreed that not all could do a reasonable job - Peter Jackson would I think.

I've been speanding the past few days listening to lots of Pern Filk. Anne's books were almost as popular of a subject as Trek. But, I can say the filk about Pern is almost always more serious the the Trek stuff.

Let all the drummers of Pern beat the tattoo.

Did you know Ms. McCaffery, M of R?
Annie and I were near neighbors for over twenty years, and I used to swim at her place almost every day. She was an amazing lady, and is sorely missed by her friends and legions of fans.

Back in the 90s Warner Brothers offered $1m for the rights to the Pern series (an offer that Anne would have been well advised to accept); unfortunately her "financial adviser" talked her out of it, and from this point on things became murky with the result that the proposed film never happened. Nor, in my opinion, is it likely to happen in the foreseeable future; I could be wrong, but it's my guess that James Cameron's film AVATAR has staked out the dragon riding turf, and that DRAGON RIDERS OF PERN will probably remain on the book shelf rather than soar across the big screen.

    Re: Dragons with folded wings....

The whole concept is entirely different to Avatar or any other movie with dragons in it such as Dragonheart or Eragon.

Certainly it would also take more than one movie to cover the whole breadth of her vision.
