    Re: Dress Codes

"I just noticed the bola tie is the official Arizona neckwear, so I would consider wearing a black bola to an event with the invitation of "black tie or national attire"; even if it were black tie, o'natural or national attire..."

I got some nice bolos at Sheplers. Rocky Mountain Western has a great line of bolos, too. I wear them with suits (and boots and my Stetson) and with the kilt (No western boots, of course, but the Stetson sometimes.). Some of the bolos are more dressy than others. I prefer the dressy ones.

A guy at a conference told me he wouldn't have the cajones to wear a bolo to work. My reply was "I wear mine around my neck."

I have also noticed that, since I added the kilts to the office rotation, nobody makes smart remarks about my boots-and-bolo-with-suits any more. Whatever. If you have the desire to wear a bolo, and the taste to make it fit, there is no reason to hesitate about wearing one.

    Re: Dress Codes

Like I said, both of my grandfathers wore bolas from time to time. I might have one of them somewhere around here in storage, but it wasn't too fancy.

I'm looking into it, but not to wear with a traditional kilt.

I'm going to a New Year's Eve function and the event information states dress code as "cocktail attire".

With a kilt what would be the equivalent of "cocktail attire"? I don't want to be overdressed but then again, I don't want to be too casual either.

I would have thought that means a nice suit for the man, cocktail dress for the lady. The kilt equivalent there would be anything from tweed jacket through to black argyll (with or without shiny buttons) and a normal tie. Vest optional but I probably wouldn't wear one

    Re: Dress Codes

I think of 'cocktail attire' as a balance between casual and formal. Sort of like dark business suit, but a touch of individual style like maybe a bold colored shirt or tie. The kilt already has the whole "individual style" thing covered, so as long as you sport a jacket and tie you're covered.
