Re: Stolen pipes
As much as getting the thief's head on a pike is the ideal situation, as others have said, these will be hard to sell for what they are worth. Posters in the local pawn shops offering $100 cash for their return - no questions asked - may get them back.

Re: Stolen pipes
I know you are supposed to be forgiving, but there ought to be special torments in a certain level of hell for people the likes of these.

Re: Stolen pipes
Thanks to everyone for the great information and advice. We unfortunately never added the pipes to our homeowners policy as a special "rider", so we may be out of luck there. Bitter lesson learned, perhaps.
There is contents insurance coverage on the van which may still come through for us, waiting for that info now.
He never, ever left those pipes in a vehicle over night. Never. Until that night, that is. I suspect that he never will again.
But as some of you said already, it's more about the heartbreak than the money at this point, and we're all really saddened for his loss. His first set of pipes were Dunbar synthetics, and he wanted to sell them last year. I advised him against it, and thank goodness he didn't do it, so the music is not dead yet...just not quite as rich.
I'll post again if there is any news, I will try to act on these excellent suggestions, and if he can locate detailed photos of his set I will post those as well.
With much appreciation,

Re: Stolen pipes
Don't give up hope of finding the pipes.
I knew someone who lost a guitar and banjo from a gig and from then on had his business cards printed with the details of the instruments on the back.
Seventeen years later a total stranger brought them to the door, said "I've had your card on my notice board for twelve years." and walked away before the shock wore of.
The instruments were still in the same cases, and they looked as though they had never been opened since they were taken.
I hope that it is far sooner that your son gets the bagpipes back, but don't ever stop looking for them.
