    How would you wear it?

I'm looking for ideas on colours for a dress shirt, and whether a striped tie would be the way to go... As for hose, all we have right now are oatmeal or white. The occasion is a Burns supper/fundraiser. Thanks.

Tattersalls shirt, cream with brown or blue stripe/check and club style tie with maybe maroons or reds in it. Go with the oatmeal hose

    Hello,

    Personally, I would go...
    1. Oatmeal Hose w/ garter ties
    2. Columbia Blue dress shirt
    3. If no "Daywear" waistcoat, a complimentary solid sweater vest, but complimentary to the tweed not necessarily the tartan - Navy, Forest, Brick Red, Deep Mustard.
    4. "Regimental" style striped tie of a micro-fibre or something that is not too "shiny" - www.ties.com; www.ties-necktie.com

I would have my garter ties play on a stripe in the neck tie and have the pair work with the sweater vest.

    Just me. Like the kilt

Basically any color shirt would work, except maybe yellow. I was thinking pearl/grey, oxford cloth blue or plain white. For a bit of color, a regimental stripe tie would work just fine. One could also go with a sweater or sweater vest - I'd go burgundy/wine or even full-on red.

    Oatmeal hose for sure.

As Domehead, flashes/garters to compliment a color in the tie or the vest.

Also, please remember to remove the basting stiches from the pleats...

Sheeesh anything really..........tattersal, cream, blue, green, white? I can picture a nice green such as in the kilt? Even a tan/cream like the sporran would be kinda cool perhaps. Tough to go wrong. You'd have to really try hard.

For a day shirt, I like Tattersall. For dress, with that kilt, light blue or mint green. I would go for oatmeal hose.

A plain waistcoat will always raise an outfit up a notch. Darker for preference. If wearing a waistcoat, then very little tie will be seen. So I am going to advocate something a bit radical.

Think about Paisley. It has a long and honourable Scottish heritage as it was originally produced in Paisley, in Scotland. It could add a small splash of colour away from the kilt and will be a talking point as no one will know the history.

    Regards

    Chas

You ask about a color for a dress shirt -- if we are talking a formal event I have to say white, every time. If this is something more casual where daywear would be appropriate then any of the other colors mentioned, or a tattersal shirt, would work fine.

Of the hose color choices available, I'd opt for the oatmeal. But there are so many hose colors that would work well with that kilt, I'd encourage you to invest in some other options. A charcoal grey would tone well with the jacket. Lovat blue looks good with everything! Why not a deep claret to bring some color to the outfit? Or a nice yellow?

OK, the occasion is a Burns supper. What level of dress are you trying to achieve here? The fur sporran with metal cantle is an evening dress sporran, yet it's being paired with a daywear tweed jacket. So I guess I'm a little confused as to which way you're trying to go.

That aside, if I were picking a shirt to go with that kilt and jacket (and were sticking with the daywear theme), I would go with a yellow tattersal and striped tie. Unfortunately, that might look a bit odd with white or oatmeal hose, so if you're stuck with those choices for hose, I'd probably second Chas's recommendation of light blue or mint green. Nothing too dark.
