    Jacket preference

Advice please, I will be getting a jacket and waistcoat to wear with any one of my kilts for more formally occasions, at the moment I tend to be more casual wearing a demin, MA1 or Harrington jacket.
Should I go for the argyll or the prince Charlie, both are nice looking and would only be for occasional wear.
i am rather a broad fellow and do wonder if the PC would suit as well

I think it must be a question of the purpose. A PC is - as I regard it - more tux/white tee than the Argyle which I should rather use for "business suit" occasions. I see no reasons why the PC should not suit you.

What kind of "more formal" occasions are you planning to wear it for?

Personally, I think if you don't have a black Argyll, that should come before a PC. It is much more versatile and usually more appropriate.

    +2

a black Barathea Argyll can be worn:

without a waistcoat with a straight tie for "business dress"
with a 5 button waistcoat and straight tie for same
with a 3 button waistcoat and bow tie for black tie.
with a tartan waistcoat and bow tie for same

It's loads more versatile than a PC, which should really only be worn for black tie events.

First of all I have to tell you that this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-British-...item5d38608716
is really nice. I got one and love it. It is casual, useful and well-made.

For a really flexible garment is a tweed Argyl jacket. Goes with everything. A PC, as noted above, is formal. I have a Lovat green jacket and waistcoat that would do for a Sunday dinner or Opera as well as so much more.

Look at it like this Stoo, a PC is like a dinner jacket, which you would wear to a formal dinner dance or a really formal do where a DJ/tuxedo would be worn. An Argyle is like a smart blazer that you can dress up to attend formal functions or dress down for more casual meetings.

I vote for the Argyle in black Barathea as stated by Tobus, Kyle and Scott above. Its a much more versatile jacket.

Go for the argyll, stu, in black barathea. Mine was the only "kilt" jacket I had for a while and I wore it everywhere with no problems. What a shame that you are a "rather broad fellow" because I have one I could of let you have but it will certainly be too small for you. Unlucky!

If you are big in the waist like me, I have found that Argyll jackets are much more flattering than Prince Charlies.

The most "slimming" look for me is to wear an Argyll without waistcoat or belt, and button the Argyll (one button only). This trims off 30 pounds easily! The waistcoat and belt add thickness around the waist.

Wearing the Argyll unbuttoned with a waistcoat adds pounds, and a Prince Charlie does even more! On my body anyway.

Here I am a few years ago wearing an Argyll without waistcoat or belt, buttoned

Here I am recently, 30 pounds lighter than I was when the above photo was taken, but looking heavier, wearing a PC with the waistcoat from my Argyll (you can see the difference in my face!)
