Kiltmaker in Portland, OR?
I have some simple alterations I need done (moving straps/buckles), but I want someone who knows what they're doing, and how to fit a kilt. Is there anyone in portland who can help me out?

Try this gentleman....http://www.westcoastkilts.com/. Not that there isn't anyone in Portland to do the job....this just happened to come to mind! Or, why not try Freedom Kilts....one of the 'partner' forums on this site?

Thanks for the links. I'm really hoping to find someone local, so they can actually fit the kilt to me properly and place the buckles and straps appropriately. I'm a total newbie to the kilt world, and I don't yet have a keen sense for how it's supposed to fit.

Hi guy. There are many who buy successfully over the web, and I recognize that, but I for one share your wish to have the kiltmaker measure me up him/herself. Less chance of miscommunication.
Welcome aboard; you might want to introduce yourself at the "Newbie" forum http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f108/ I think you might be surprised at the warmth of the reception you'll receive.

If only I had an upcoming visit to my sister who lives in Beaverton so I could help you with that.
I do lots of kilt alterations both near and from afar.
This is what I do:
Ask a friend or someone to help as a second pair of hands.
Wrap the kilt around yourself without putting the strap through the strap hole.
Pull the kilt snugly around your waist at the correct level where the buckle prong is.
Have your helper then mark with a safety pin, the point on the kilt where the fringe edge of the apron overlaps the pleats (or the underapron if the kilt is too small) at the waist level and hip (3rd strap) level.
With that information from the safety pin markers, a kiltmaker would know how much to move the underapron strap and the buckles on the right hand side of the back of the kilt.
I'm sure there are other methods, but that has always worked for me, doing alterations from afar.

I believe that they only do modern utility kilts.
I don't know if they would be able to help if your kilt happens to be a traditional one.

His name is Gary. He's actually an old acquaintance of mine. He is a retired master kiltmaker (and tartan designer) and he travels a ton. He no longer builds kilts, but I happened to catch him between trips, and he did me the favor of busting out his needles to fix me up.
