Wool Neckties with day tweed

I have more than a few ties, club/college/regimental/school ties with colour combinations that match very little, plus assorted plain wool and silk ones, dotted ones etc., and I will happily wear them with a suit, sports jacket, shooting suits, blazer, highland attire, with/without a pullover etc. without a second thought . Its really something that we(I don't mean this as a class thing[although perhaps it is too], more perhaps, an upbringing thing) in the UK grow up with. Its probably an age thing as well. Its second nature for many. I will admit to having favorites though.

I do like wearing solid coloured, wool neckties with my Highland day attire, but I primarily wear silk neckties with either a regimental stripe, repp, or crested. I actually sold off all of my solid coloured, wool neckties made by Lochcarron, because I seldom wore them. I have also worn solid coloured (usually in navy), cotton knit neckties with my Highland day attire (see below).

And I typically wear the same Regimental, stripe/Rep style ties in wool. Solids I wear less frequently, Canada Day being a good example. I wore a solid red tie on a white shirt in honour of the Canadian flag but typically I'd have a pattern and stripe respectively.

I just tend to think stripes and crested variants are far more interesting, yet they can also be meaningful and representative of something - like when I wear my U.S. Marine Corps Regimental Tie. However, a smart wool or knit tie does pair nicely with a check or tattersal shirt and a tweedy jacket/waistcoat - something very country and "earthy" about that look. Along with a wee nip, it warms the soul.

I have some knit wool ties from House of Cheviot that I like to wear with my tweed jackets in the fall and winter (and sometimes spring and summer!).



I also have a few plain colored woven wool ties (all Lochcarron made, I think) that tend to get a lot of wear with my kilts. A light blue one, a brown, and a light red that goes well with some of my weathered tartans.

Just a quick observation.

Non-tartan wool ties are getting harder and harder to find in the UK.

In a specialist gentleman's outfitter, certainly. Anywhere else, not to be found.

I wear a tie to work every day. Whether kilted or not, as long as the colors don't violently clash, I spend about 3.5 microseconds deciding what tie to wear.

Just FYI, I brought in some wool knit House of Cheviot neck ties a couple of years back but they did not really take off. I have what limited stock I still have on hand listed for sale here.

I actually sold off all of my solid coloured, wool neckties made by Lochcarron, because I seldom wore them.
