Glengarry with dicing... thoughts?
I have a vintage glengarry of the typical style in dark blue with the usual red and white dicing. I picked this up on an auction as it came with another item and I had no interest in it or wearing it. Now that I have it, I do think it looks sharp.
What are the rabble's thoughts on this style of glengarry? Is it too Military/Pipe Band looking with the dicing or is it acceptable for civvie wear?
Here is a quick and ugly selfie (not sure why I look googly-eyed) as

Since you asked:
Personally, for regular (civilian) Highland Dress I have never really cared for the Glengarry bonnet either with or without dicing. To my eyes this particular style of Highland bonnet looks better on a piper, a drummer, or a person in uniform. However, I will admit that I once owned two plain, Robert Mackie Glengarry bonnets; one in navy blue with a red toorie, and one in black with a red toorie. I wore them one time, then realised that I would never wear them again (since I prefer the look of the Balmoral bonnet with my Highland day attire), and promptly sold them on XMTS. Naturally, wear what you like! Just my two pence here...for what it's worth.
Cheers,

I think it looks sharp too and you can wear it with pride as acknowledging you fealty to the British Crown. You do know that is why the dicing is there don't you?

Speaking of such, has anyone found any good evidence of this being the case. I am not to disagree, but it seems more a modern conception. That said, I have no real dislike or like of the present royal family. Historically, my family's allegiances are pretty obvious as well (Campbell).

Like Kyle, I'm not a huge fan of the Glengarry for civilian wear, as it is a little too military-like, and indeed many styles of military caps followed that style. I know that Highland dress and Highland regimental dress are pretty close anyway, but it's over the line for me. I just can't pull it off.
But man, you sure have "the look" going on! You wear it well. But you'll inevitably be asked where your bagpipes are, if anyone has the guts to make a crack!

I totally understand this. Much of highland wear is a bit too military fashion for me, whether it be the epaulette and cuff of most jackets, or ever the glengarry and beret-like balmoral. And there is the pipe band thing for much of it too.

I like the glengarry, and I think that one looks really good on you. When I think back (waaay back!) when I was in the reserves, we wore our balmorals almost all the time, and seldom wore our glens. Maybe that's why I like them so much for civilian wear now.

"The Highland dress is essentially a ‘free' dress - that is to say, a man's taste and circumstances must alone be permitted to decide when and where and how he should wear it... I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed."
Having said that, I personally stand with Kyle and Tobus on this one. I really do like the Balmoral with my Highland wear, on the other hand I think you certainly cut a dash with the Glengarry. If you like it wear it in good health.
