Errrrrr, well ummmmmmm, the locals that I'm related to & acquainted with, whom are still alive taught me that the "Surname Of ..." designation is a legal moniker concerning land holding and elevated status, perhaps to a Baronetcy, which may be periodically re-issued, dependent on dormancy.
Considering the majority of historic Cameron territory traveled south to the northern shore of Loch Linnhe, just a wee bit north-west of Fort William, I assume I was taught that "Cameron of Locheil" was derived from what was, at some point, "Cameron of Loch Eil" or something similar.
My comment had to do with credibility issues regarding the site sourced for Mr. MacDonald, rather than engendering a dialectal, register or semiotic debate.
Besides, Mr. MacDonald spells it the way I was taught, so...when in Rome 'n all that.

Well have it your way, if you must, but it may be helpful for you to know that Donald Cameron of Lochiel, spells it Lochiel as did his father and Grandfather to my certain knowledge and the picture at Achnacarry is of the "Gentle Lochiel", so the family have been spelling it that way for more than a wee while. Just trying to be helpful, to Peter too I hope, in a light hearted sort of way. So... when in Lochaber 'n all that.

Peter, I am not sure, but I think the second picture in your OP may be hanging in the West Highland Museum in Fort William.

Whatever, Jock.
I don't take most of what you say the way almost everyone else on here does. You couch your comments, post-script, in the guise of light-hearted humor, but they're laced with geo-centric provincial-ness. "Errrrrrr, Well ummmmmmm" is not light-hearted humor. It is caustic and you might as well have said, "You don't know what you are talking about, dummy, but..."
As for "helping" Mr. MacDonald, too? If that were the case, why not correct his spelling prior to my bringing up the issue? We've gone around before, you and I. Others on here can extend whatever respect they feel you deserve, but you are not better than everyone else because of where you are. It insults a massive percentage of your own countrymen and their kin who, for whatever reason, are unwilling to confront you on this.
As for Mr. Cameron of Locheil and his progeny, please extend my apologies.

I am genuinely sorry that you interpret my words and attempt at humour as you do. I will not pursue our conversation, lest you misunderstand even further what I say.

I apologise, truly, for all the agro that my early morning typo (now corrected) caused! Perhaps we should revert to the original spelling and avoid confusion, or would it.... :-)

Peter, is it your hunch that no purported pre-1745 tartans remain with us today and that all such early clan tartan roads lead to Wilsons?
