Traditionals are wool... handsewn... heavy... and usually a product of the Isles. It has NOTHING to do with tartans and a few buckles. I would not consider Southern Celt or some of the other "neo traditionals" in that class either. There's a DISTINCT difference in the kilts... as anyone that owns them will tell you.

That's FAR from a knock on any of these companies, but a fact in the difference. They have their place in the monetary and material spectrum. Once you've had a "Traditional"... the difference is so evident that it's VERY CLEAR.

Again... I own a load of kilts from a bunch of companies, and they all have their merits. A "Traditional" is the only designation that CAN NOT be debated. There's been WAY too much discussion on the HUGE difference of the actuals and the "nots". Simply put, if a "traditional" is tartan, hidden stitches and a few buckles... then there's a LOAD of traditional kilts being worn by women! The day Hector Russell makes a Poly-Viscose or cotton-poly kilt is the day that I get rid of mine. The day that some of the "CR_P" that we see on eBay is considered a serious "traditional" is the day that I sell-off my kilts. There's WAY too much pride in the well-made, hand-sewn, heavy woven, precisely sewn, and properly pleated Traditional kilt for the term to be given to anything BUT just that!!!!!

    Touchy subject and term here?!

    Jimmy,

I have to agree with just about everything you say in that post. Well done. There are, of course, many very excellent traditional kilt makers across Scotland (Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany) not just on the Isles, and not just Hector Russell!

99% of what I see on Ebay makes me feel ill, and extremely sorry for those who are duped, because of their inexperience, into buying what is little more than rubbish.

Personally, I love my 30 contemporary kilts as much as my 10 traditional ones, but for different reasons. There is still nothing, nothing at all, to compare with a genuine traditional kilt.
