Well thats where I'm confused. I read that the Welsh family tartans aren't proper tartan because the sett is different, it is rectangular, rather than square. So I don’t know if its tartan or not.

While I am not very well versed on welsh tartans/cilts, I am pretty sure they are tartan

Mel .... I have 3 Welsh Cilts and 3 universal fashioned designed ones and 2 Scottish one's plus the Douglas when the wife finishes it ... only two of all those were bought made to measure and new ... the rest were bought ex hire. In fact I will shortly be doing the rounds of several hire shops again, as its now near the end of the wedding season. Its the fashioned design one's that are my wife's and friends most favourite one's ... they do still like the others of course. A few pics of the modern design one's I have ..

The Scottish Register says:

Despite there being no known tradition of tartan in Wales, this is one of a growing series of commercial Welsh 'name' tartans marketed by the Wales Tartan Centre in Cardiff. Their inclusion in this Index does not confer upon them ANY historical or genealogical credibility and the use of the words 'of Wales' is not of conventional territorial significance but is purely to identify the source and thus avoid confusion with surnames which have a genuine tartan connection. Designed for The Wales Tartan Centre in Cardiff by Sheila Daniel of Cambrian Woollen Mill, Powys, they're unusual in that almost all of them incorporate odd numbered threads and have quite different warp & weft, both in thread numbers and sometimes colours. I've only the one, Powell of Wales I've had made and that was a casual, I have gone for lighter weights, Commercial cilts I have are, Spirit of Wales, Roving Celt and Prince of Wales which is really nice, I got that one on ebay, but I'm waiting on a casual Celtic Nations from USA Kilts. Now the weather is turning, I'm wondering if I should get a tank.
