Kilted Fridays Adventures

Though I frequently kilt-up on Fridays, today is the first time that I have come anywhere close to an adventure. I wore a great kilt (with modern clothing) for the first time since the cast came off my hand. I wore traditional kilts while it was on because arranging the top part is complicated with one hand. Now the GK has a way of attracting more attention than other types and today was no different in that detail.

There were the usual questions about clan affiliation and the like and the mother of a 5th grader who had just taken up the pipes who inquired about places to get some highland attire. Over all that was pretty common. There was however, one gentleman who had some interesting views.

He started with the regular "What clan?" I told him and proceeded to ask if he had any Scottish or Irish connections. It seems that he is of Irish and Native American decent and is a member of the clan MacTin-foil hat. Yes, after he told me of his tribal connections, he continued on to tell me how he is also descended of Extra Terrestrials. It seems that Highland events, Pow-wows, and most other cultural celebrations and historical reenactments are monitored by aliens who are trying to discover more about their own lost histories. Since they have inter-mingled with our own society, they see studying our cultures as clues to understanding their own.

Fortunately, I've a good poker face and must have seen legitimately interested. He even took the time to show me his membership card for some club that dedicates themselves to the study of such matters.

Proof of that old saying " there are two types of people in this world, Scots and those who wish they were" .... But ET??? Who knew???

No offence taken, Jock. In fact, I generally agree with you as to other people's world views. Truth be told, I was content to go about my business until he put a pack of mushrooms in my wife and I's shopping cart and insist that we eat them raw to block the "atomic radiation" from absorbing into our systems. He believes that the Fahrenheit temperature given in the weather forecast is actually ambient radiation in the atmosphere. But he doesn't know if it's from the sun, pollution, or "the high ones trying to hasten our evolution." The actual conversation lasted around 20 minutes. I only posted the highlights.

Who knows? Perhaps the fellow is right? In the meantime the Earth manages to carry on spinning and that is fine by me.

First off, I'm considered fairly knowledgeable about crackpot ideas put forth by wackos, and many might say takes
one to know one. I've not found any evidence of a clan MacTinfoilhat. Doesn't mean it isn't there, just that my not
having run across it makes the idea suspicious.

I will say that having sat with quite a few elders of various tribes, there is a recurring thread of stories about off-Earth
origins, and that the cousins come to visit from time to time. While I am not personally able to verify or deny, I can
say I've also sat with some pretty eminent scientists who say in private that they tend to agree, but have not yet
enough evidence to be willing to make that statement publicly.

To get us back on topic, wore clergy tartan w/ Native designs tee, claret hose, mustard garter ties, and moccasins
to the bank, grocery store, and hardware store on Friday. No pictures, but several thumbs up and good conversation.

To celebrate our fourth anniversary last Friday, my wife and I went out to the Brae Loch Inn in Cazenovia, NY, which purports to be "the best Scottish pub west of Edinburgh," and has absolutely excellent food. The building is pretty cool, too. To my surprise, the inn's owner/manager was kilted, and the bartender was also wearing a tartan waistcoat and trews, which led to a short conversation about the respective garments. I admit that, by that point, I had drank a bit too much of the Silver Scot Ale that one of the local brewers makes specifically for Brae Loch to remember what the owner was wearing, but my (fuggy) memory seems to recall the bartender's waistcoat was a red and yellow--I think Stewart? Maybe the Prince Charles? I highly recommend the Guinness Steak Pie to anyone who may visit someday.

Anyhow, I wore my Angus ancient--we both have garments in the tartan--the one I'm wearing is the brechan kilt from Kinloch Anderson. My family, a particular sliver of the Knight family, can be traced back to Angus, the discovery of which was what got me interested in Kilts and Scotland in the first place. I was hoping to get to visit the area on our vacation at the end of June, but we couldn't quite make it work after compromising on other areas to visit.



Aside from the Angus, I have a McNaughton kilt pin at the bottom of the kilt, because I have connections to that clan as well.

Incidentally, it was also my first time wearing a wool kilt out and about. When we invested in the Angus, we agreed it would be for special occasions, but I was surprised at how warm the wool was, without making me sweat--and heavy enough to avoid making a scene in the heavy lake wind. I'm definitely going to pick up another wool for more regular use.

A couple pals and I get together weekly to play our pipes...and, of course, solve the world's problems.

My friend Sean has been on the practice chanter for a few months now, and has moved onto the goose. Tonight, I suggested that he wear his new kilt (a USA Casual) for his first time out kilted, and we'd have a mini kilt night in his honor. He's rockin' the Clark tartan. Fun times!
