Black Watch Tartan choice
Hi All,
Something that comes to mind, I've only been on a short time but I've read quite a few threads past and present ,I have noticed that there are a lot of you guys across the water have kilts in the Black Watch tartan or have ex army kilts in the same, just wondered what made you choose that tartan, just my curiosity, as my father served in THE BLACK WATCH RHR

Peter, your humor is always welcome.
Derek, I expect (my own thoughts included) military veterans like the connection to the kilt. Many of us like the color combination. A traditional kilt with a high rise waist and heavy material fit our idea of military gear.
Though I am not, some are even Campbell clansmen.

Well... I am a Campbell.
Other than that and for the others... I assume one reason is that it is a very common and easy to find tartan and because it is considered a "universal" tartan.

I live close to an army town and have seen ex-army issue Black Watch for sale in a surplus store. Some are amazing in 22ounce wool.

Thanks all for replies. Figheadair you made me chuckle all I can say to that is there must be a big Campbell clan, and being a Macgregor got to be careful, haha.

I remember my dads kilt being darker than the present RROS kilts, and seeing him press it with a brush stale up the pleats, which makes me think that it was not knife pleated.

The old Black Watch regimental kilts were Government Sett No. 1. Currently, the RROS uses No. 1A which has a lighter green in it.

You father was probably in or had a Black Watch kilt which was Government Tartan No1. The Argylls wore Government Tartan No 1A (lighter green) and this is that version that the RRS wear.

I could have thrown in the Sutherland, Grants and Munros all of whom also wear the Government or Black Watch tartan in one form or other. Interesting, a number of Macgregors adopted the name Campbell during the time that their surname was proscribed.
