    Sniomh Gartain (garter tie)

    Greetings,
Newbie to the forum. So I have noticed that all the threads about traditional garter ties, their knots, and especially the infamous Sniomh Gartain have all gone kind of cold. Anywho, I have been slowly building a Jacobite rebellion outfit and have been going crazy over figuring out this knot. after a little research and sheer luck, I think I have something. If anyone for sure knows how to tie it let me know or let me know what you think?

    This interests me

As a reenactor over the last few decades Ive always just worn a length of red wool twill tape, usually tied in a square knot to hold up my hose. Recent research relating to the 42nd and 77th here in North America in the late 1750's shows that their garters were something special, logistics documents use terms like "Bespoke" and "Regimental Garters" so I probably need to get even deeper into the archives.

I do have a photo of a Jacobite garter, but I can not see anything from the photo that might lead one to any sort of knowledgeof how it might have been tied.

So I take it you don't mean one of the knots demonstrated here (among the related videos) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h08uYRMx7A?

I didn't see any related videos that deal with this specific knot. It's this one (from the Tartans Authority web page):

The one I use is tie to replicate the saltire rather than the style Matt shows.

That is correct, supposedly this knot is subosed to be something close to a knot you would use on a neck tie. (IE adjustable)

I have used one much like that one myself, As I've noticed there is nothing about the sniomh gartain knot. I will post either an instructional video or photos soon to the knot i have "figured out"
