Did I buy the ugliest kilt on the planet?

This was my first real kilt, I wanted the Gun tartan because my ggrandmother was a Johnson. I know its probably pure fantasy that there is any connection to the Clan Gunn but that's what I was told I could wear years ago and it stuck.

Where the mistake was made was not getting the modern or ancient tartan,or even the weathered. I was afraid the pastel colors wouldn't be easy to match and the dark is nice but seemed a little plain I guess. So for some crazy reason I chose the muted, I can't find anything that looks right or good with this kilt ,not even socks. The idea of the muted tartan came from the pic of the chief,he looks OK...but I don't want to look like a leprechaun all the time.

Is there any way to make this kilt look better?

That's great, Im glad somebody does,but what would you wear with it?
Nothing too fancy either ,only very casual stuff.

I think it’s better that it doesn’t match exactly. You don’t want it all to just blend together. Not matching will make the tartan stand out more.

I’m coming to prefer muted shades over the ubiquitous ancient. Even my Macdonald modern pv kilt, which I felt was just too dark when I got it, has grown on me quite a bit. My first tank will probably be Macdonald muted or Macdonald of glengarry modern.

Tattersall type shirt, pullover sweater, brown sporran & brogues (not gillies) green or blue hose with accent self-tie garters.

I think it would be smashing.

As the what to wear with it, your clan chief looks well turned out. Dark green accessories compliment the lighter green of the kilt so the outfit isn’t just a blob of the same green. I don’t think he looks like a leprechaun at all

And I’d wear any of the hose you have with it. I think they all look fine. And the chiefs blue shirt and green tie look quite sharp with it too.

I like the tartan, I’d pick up the red stripe there’s also the black square...that’s being conservative.... other guys will be more creative enjoy your kilt!

I'm sure there will be others that have more knowledgeable advice, but mine is to forget matchy matchy........The tartan is wonderful and nothing in the rest of the attire has to match it......each part of your attire can and should stand on it's own......wear your kilt with pride and confidence, and the compliments will come flooding to you.......that is my opinion

Terry, its not so much about matching that I'm concerned about...actually I would prefer not to be wearing all olive and light blue. I just think its a bit too much green and blue and nothing seems to actually look good with it, unlike my Black Watch which anything seems to look OK with.

Tokareva, to me tartans can be peculiar things. Every one's eyes picks out something different in the colour scheme. Some people can hardly differentiate between one tartan and the next ....they just look like a tartan of a dominate colour. Other people can see the difference in just one thread colour
When I first got my Canadian Maple Leaf tartan I thought it was more bright red than the burgundy I thought I ordered and was just a tiny bit disappointed ..... after wearing it a few times I now don't think it is as bright a red as I first thought at all, and now I think if it was even slightly more burgundy it would be too dark.
It seems that whatever colour of hose or waist coat or jacket I wear changes the shades in the tartan. Even the colour of sporran and shoes seem to have an effect.
Experiment with it and you may come to think, that even just wearing the kilt with pride and confidence seems to change the tartan as well
I hope you will learn to like it or maybe even love it as much as other kilt wearers will and do
