There's a local slant on this "kilt undergarments" discussion.

Here in Southern California people often wear, as outergarments, things which in other times and places would probably be regarded as only suitable for being undergarments, namely swimming trunks, board shorts, gym shorts, etc



These things are very lightweight and thin, and many pipers around here, when they put on their kilts for gigs, leave their trunks/shorts on.

This is especially handy since the local custom is for pipers and drummers to drive to the Games or performance location in ordinary clothes, and throw on their kilts in the venue's car park.

One can certainly change from ordinary trousers or Bermuda shorts in public without indecency if the correct order of operations is followed, and that's seen in every car park at every Highland Games here, but leaving on the trunks/board shorts/gym shorts makes indecency impossible.

recall any names of tunes? We're always looking for old tunes about kilts to toss into rotation.

I shall have to ask my family next time we Skype. I wasn't much of a singer myself and it tended to be the lassies who sang those songs.
