International Travel, Kilted

Hiya-

My wife and I are going on a trip from Budapest to Prague in the middle of April 2022. We'd originally planned it for 2020 but our plans were monkey-stomped by COVID-19. This is our very first time doing such a thing and our well traveled friends have said that wearing a kilt in Hungary or The Czech Republic is not advised... hmmm. So, I am looking for a bit of advice from the kilted lads of X-Marks. One of the casualties of COVID-19 was trousers; well, the wearing of them. I am kilted now most of the time and find it to be far more comfortable than slacks/trousers/jeans due to where the kilt presses on my back - motorcycle accident and subsequent surgery have left me with some sensitive spots where trousers press on me.

Our trip begins in Hungary and takes us through Germany and Austria, winding up in Prague. I realise that this whole line of advice from our well-meaning friends may just be a tempest-in-a-teapot but... I don't want to get there and discover that there is some cultural taboo that I'd be violating. After all, we're going on this trip to see the sights and taste the food and hear the music without offending the locals.

I'd appreciate any insights you all may have to share.

If it's a matter of where trousers vs. a kilt rest on your back and apply pressure, I'd look into some vintage or repro fishtail trousers. Since they sit higher up and are worn with suspenders (braces), they won't press into your low back the way jeans/chinos would do.

I have worn a kilt in Prague without any problems - I was attending my sister-in-law's wedding and she had asked her father and I to wear our kilts - if anything the local seamed quite enamoured by it.

I have been all over the Czech Republic in a kilt and found nothing but positivity. I was even persuaded to do a talk at a local school. It would have been much better talk if I had not spent the previous evening in the Eggenberg Brewery lagering rooms.

I have heard that kilted in Prague/The Czech Republic is not a problem... what about Budapest/Hungary? Any feedback there?

Refused service at restaurants? Not allowed to enter shops and museums?

I don't want to overstate this but, I think that you might have more problems wearing the kilt in parts of Scotland than wearing it anywhere in Europe. Sometimes the natural Scottish------particularly Highlanders----- reticence to comment publicly about anything fails them and sometimes, the Scots wicked and sometimes brutal sense of humour gets the better of them, particularly in Glasgow and Dundee.
