Hemp Kilts
Hello all.
I just found a link to http://www.the-hilt.com from this web site and am intrigued. Has anyone ordered from them? Can you comment on the fit and quality?
First off, as a disclaimer, I'm generally not a big fan of the modern, American, contemporary kilt. I tend to favor the traditional woolen Scottish kilts, made by the professionals. I know they cost more, but to me they are worth it.
To me, the contemporary, non-traditional kilts break down into two categories. 1) inexpensive imitation versions of traditional Scottish kilts, which I don't like. 2) non-traditional kilts that are not trying to copy the Scottish kilt, but are doing their own thing. Category No. 2 I can appreciate, and know many men that enjoy wearing them.
Having said that, though, I much prefer the look, feel, and quality of a traditionally made Scottish kilt. Knowing that, would I like this hemp kilt?
I like solid kilts, so that is not an issue. But I've never seen a kilt made from hemp, so I am curious about the weight, hang, and feel of it. And what is the craftmanship like? Any comments?
Aye,
Matt

Yeah, I was interesting in their jackets. I like wearing a jacket that is cut for wear with a kilt, but without all the whistles and bells of the standard "kilt jackets." Right now I have a Harris Tweed sportscoat that has been shortened for kilt wear that I like. But I am intrigued by their the hemp jackets on that site....
Surely someone has ordered from them?

I played with the idea of making hemp kilts for a while. There are a lot of different weights, weaves, and qualities of hemp, none of which I found would hold a pleat without the fabric also having a big tendency to wrinkle.
The Hilt may have solved this. I've not seen a Hilt, so I can't speak about them. I know their kilt prices are far below what hemp fabric cost in North America.

I heard about these "Hilts" a couple of years ago and made contact with the company, thinking it might be fun to have one in my Kilt Kollection. Somehow I never got around to doing anything more about it.
You have renewed my interest, Matt. Maybe I'll send them my order after all!

I've been eyeing them for a while myself... It's almost tempting to be the first with feedback, but I think I'll hold off for a while.

I came real close to ordering one a few months ago when I had the kilt sickness really really bad and still had some margin on my plastic.
The website looked just a little too flaky and their weren't real good pics of their kilts...looked more skirty and trendy, than functional. Haven't checked the site out at all.
Maybe we should all email the folks and tell them there's a few hundred kilt junkies wanting to examine their product and please send one to our kilted ledgend Ham for his evaluation....
Also thought there were some posts about the site a few months back...???

I don't mean to put a damper on this subject, but I read a bad review of the customer service last year. I believe it was posted in kiltmen.com.
Th Hilt looks a little skirty for my taste. In fact, it looks like a cross between a kilt and s Sarong. I don't know if I would want one. But I live on a beach in South East Asia, I would different consider one. For now, no.
