all the same, but it would be good when sporran makers realise that a strap of leather is far better for casual wear and kinder to the kilt than the chain.
I've never worn a chain on a sporran, they are fine in pipe bands, but not for everyday wear.

Graham, spot on!
(Oh dear, here I go again!).... When I was a lad!! the only time anyone wore a chain/strap on their sporran was on an evening dress, silver and sealskin sporran. All day-sporrans came with, and were worn with, plain leather straps.
To this day, I really dislike seeing (let alone, wearing) chains with day-sporrans. My Buzz Kidder chain went straight into the odds-and-ends box in my garage to be recycled later!!

Just one more positive testimonial. I only own one sporran right now and it's a BK Rob Roy. Not quite as roomy or handsome as a Freelander but I've been wearing it almost every day since November when I went to wearing the kilt almost full time and it's holding up great. I can squeeze my wallet, keychain, cell phone (big Nextel) and a digital camera in there without any trouble. The stitching is tough. My only problem I've had has been with the tassles catching on things and I have ripped the end on one of the tassles as a result. And I really don't like the chain but I haven't replaced it with a strap yet. I tried replacing it with a Cragie sporran sling but that didn't work out.

I just recently purchased a brown Buzz Kidder Rob Roy sporran from Matt and I think that this this will hold up very well to daily wear. The leather is heavy, oiled, and very sturdy. I wear it all over the place and even when hunting.I haven't been able to cram it full yet.
My feeling is if you get this sucker full then your carrying WAY too much stuff.

I just ordered a strap from RKilts for the Rob Roy...
Now to save up for that new black sporran strap...... I envision 'braids', magic braids perhaps.....

Buzz also makes and sells "sporran belt loops" that attach to the back of his (or any) sporran and loop over the belt. I'm wearing them in the picture on my web site:
http://albanach.org
We sell them in the museum gift shop for $11.95.

The only problem with the sporran suspender is you can't slide the sporran over to the hip. Since I do this at times to get it out of the way when I'm doing things they don't work for me.
