Ah, but the Lady is most certainly not reflecting the customs from 1780. At this time there were but a very small handfull of named tartans -- if any at all -- and these would have been mostly "fashion" names. In other words, no one at the time would have seriously considered the tartans the property of, or even symbols of, the families or places whose names they bore. The only people wearing regulated tartans at this time would have been the military regiments.

But my main point is this -- no one in 1780 would have recognized this Lady's attitude as anything indiginous to their culture.

thanks, that was sort of my point. I used my historical shorthand and I should be more careful. In my context 1780 is the point that the kilt becomes an English fashion statement and from that concept/time evolves nearly all the modern rules kilt wearers are supposed to follow. I think we're saying similar things: pre-1745 - no rules (great scotch, ha ha); 1745 - 1780 - primarily military; post-1780 - English heriditary/promogeniture (how do you spell that?) rules. Those are general statements and don't even begin to take into consideration rebel versus loyalist traditions.

I also quite like it. And to obtain permission to use it requires a donation to African relief, which I think is an excellent idea. I'll put it on my list.

That's a great idea, and captures some of the climate of this G8 summit. I may have to take another look at the tartan.

Im furious that the G8 summit has brought riots to the steets of my country, these people who are rioting are not protesters-why are they not at work??
as for George Bush he should be in a streightjacket -tartan or otherwise!!!

There is no excuse for the riots. Those involved in the riots should be brought to trial.

The ones who are legitimate protesters I have to question. What are they protesting? Especially since one of the main focuses of this summit is aid to the most poverty stricken region on earth. If the protesters have real concerns, the press should cover them. I fear, however, that many of them are protesting merely because they think they should be protesting something.

Daz, from the sounds of things, the question could go so far as to ask why they are not at work in their own countries. I've several pals in the Stirling area that I'm quite concerned about, myself.

And you've got it right, these hooligans are certainly not protestors.

Can I ask a simple question - Why do we need to know all the particulars of the G8 meetings (dates, times, etc.)? Why can these world leaders simply not meet in private, or via video-conferencing, so the hooligans cannot have the opportunity to strategize so far ahead?

Sure they could, but all the leaders want to be on television. Holding secret meetings would hardly accomplish that.
