A sporran can be both decorative and functional. It can also be uncomfortable and clunky at times. I agree with Hamish when deciding whether or not to wear one. I think as one becomes increasingly experienced and builds confidence wearing a kilt in public, concerns about wearing a kilt without a sporran will pass. The sporran was not invented to be some sort of icon. A sporran is not going to make a kilt something it is not. A kilt is a kilt. Period. Seriously concerned about it being a type of skirt?... better stick to pants!

You have to take into account the two kilts that you've quoted too.
SportKilts are designed and marketed to the "first-timer" or the athlete. What in the heck do thay know about a sporran? More over... if they're only forkin-over for a SportKilt, I don't think they're really gonna "pony-up" for a sporran.
UtiliKilts have so much storage and "bling" that they're fine without the sporran. HOWEVER... when I'm in a Scottish or Irish setting, I'll wear a sporran just for the sake of having the thing there. It's empty mind you... but it's there.
I LOVE the look of the Freelander Sporrans with the UtiliKilt. They're both pretty contemporary, and actually accentuate each other's uniqueness.

The only kilt I have (so far) is an AK. They come with their own sporrans. However, I don't really like the look of it so I wear a leather one instead. Essentially it all comes down to personal preference.

Sporraned by choice
Burnout has a good point about the psychology of sporran wearing.
But.... I already paid too much for mine not to! hahahaha!
I finally 'got it' about why my girl goes on and on about handbags, you shoulda seen me choosing a sporran!
Then, after carefully choosing what I thought was the perfect all-in-one wear anyplace sporran..... gulp! One was not, was never going to be, enough.
I hear this about kilts too, its only a matter of time -and money- before i become one of the multi-kilted.
Personally, fish & chips, apple pie & cream, hotdog & mustard, tatties & neeps, beer & just about anything! sporran & kilt. You get the picture.
I think that there is also a precedent for wearing the sporran hung to one side or partly to one side, if one needs a more comfortable arrangement, for dancing, dining, any significant walking or just, ahem, hanging out.

I have three kilts, one of which is a UK Workmans. While I always wear a sporran with my 'traditional' kilts, I only wear a sporran with the UK once in a blue moon. Usually it is when going out to an informal gathering where a small black plain leather sporran with chrome chain 'dresses' up the UK a bit. Other than that, 99% of the time my UK is sporranless.

Warm Sporran?
I had to quickly cobble togather a sporran to go with my new traditional, it does NOT look right without one. My nice accessories are with my other kilt back in the USA.
For that matter I saw a newfangled kilt on a punk/goth with a nice sporran and looked good dispite the fact that the same kid in blue jeans would have been way silly.
