I can vouch for the fact that Howie Nicholsby (of "21st Century Kilts") and his father (Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd), both of Edinburgh, have a delivery van in their fleet that carries the licence plate: "K1 LTS". There is supposed to be a regulation space between the "1" and the "L", but with this one the gap has been narrowed slightly!
Our British plates are very plain when compared to the North American ones. We don't have the 'illustrations' or slogans (personal or state/province) that you do. In fact, unless you are one of the few who can 'read' the plates, we have no idea where in the country our cars come from. Also, in general, the plates given to a new car stay with that car - we don't transfer them from one vehicle to another.

I have ALBANACH on my van, and PHILABEG on my station wagon. I know Bob Martin had KILTED plates when he was in SC, but when he came to NC found it was taken, so his plates now read 2BKILTED.

Something doesn't add up.. wouldn't those plates ALBANACH, PHILABEG and 2BKILTED, be too many digits for a license plate? Aren't they limited to 7 digits, like the sample below?

I was actually wondering the same thing??
btw, where did you find that image of the SC plate? I like it. It's much better than that palm tree they have now. Is it a new design?

For one thing, Matt is in North Carolina, not South Carolina.

I, personally, was aware of that but didn't realise until I just checked, that NC does indeed let you have up to 8 characters.

Yes, most states allow seven, but some go up to eight.

Have you gone to the VA DMV website and checked on the availability of different plates. Here is what I came up with. Please excuse the "Sportkilt", it's my first kilt and is useful at least as a knock around kilt at home.
