So, Ham, when's the publish date? Looks like we'll have to reserve a copy. Anyway, the pockets thing is why I always wear the sporran. Have to have my wallet, palm pilot, change, keys, pen, penknife, lighter, pipe tool, tobacco pouch, etc. and I don't always wear a jacket or have a jacket with the appropriate pockets to carry all my junk. Besides, the tassles make that cool drumming sound when I walk.

I'm still wondering which of these duplicate threads will dominate

I love sporrans and I hate pockets (as in trousers...or on kilts for that matter)
I think the sporran is a wonderful thing, everything is right there in front of you..money, keys, glasses.

    With the sporran I feel.....protected without it I feel....vulnerable!

I agree with the view that modern, plain kilts need no sporran, tartans must have a sporran.
    As Luther said..."here I stand.."

Hamish, all you have to do is glean all that you're said here in your posts and put them together to write a book!

Look at military pictures of days when the kilt was always worn, and see how often the sporran was left off.

The Hill Walker has pockets so the inconvenience of the sporran for many activities can be obviated. Think driving.

For formal occasions it is a part of the rig.

It does not make the kilt more masculine.

I tend to leave it off for most day to day activites, or wear the far more convenient side version.

    I'd definitely buy one too.

Also, I own controlling interest in a small publishing company. If you do want to write a book on it, let me know. I'm sure it would be accepted!

I couldn't wear an animal head sporran

I just couldn't bring myself to wear an animal head sporran.

I have a dog and the last thing I need is for her to attack my crotch thinking that there's an animal on me! :-o

She's extremely protective of me and I'd rather not invite that kind of pain.

Talk about wailing and gnashing of teeth!
