Pattern for montrose doublet?

I've been looking around for a montrose doublet, and have come to the conclusion that even a wool one, rather than velvet, will cost nearly as much as a kilt. I like making my own things (though I'm not brave enough to try a wool kilt yet), and I'm pretty fair at sewing, so I thought I'd give it a go. I know a place where I can get solid wool of varying weights, so that's not a problem. It's the pattern I need, and I have no idea where to get one. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty fair, but it's so much easier when there's an existing pattern. I suppose I could find a costume pattern with the same sort of front and modify it.

And while you folks are at it if you run across a pattern for an Inverness Cape please let me know, I am definately not going to pay $600.00 to $700.00 for one.

Butterick #3993 with a few alterations, most notably a lengthening of the cape, is a good pattern for an Inverness (have the pattern, haven't gotten the material yet.)

How much $$$ are you looking to spend? I get lots of stuff from J.Higgins, they have a Montrose in black wool for $395;

I love the look of the Montrose with jabot and cuffs, but I'd never wear it. I don't have anywhere to go that formal.

I'll check that out. I think hiring a tailor to put one together would be a lot cheaper than buying one at those incredibly inflated prices.

Actually, thei greatcoats would make a nice alternative to a cape.
