Sporran for formal wear?

As I put together my formal attire, I'm trying to put something together that is tastefull, looks good, but is still somewhat personal. I often see the style of sporran with a sivler top-mounted cantle being used with formalwear, but I really don't like that type. I wouldn't mind a badger face sporran or something similar, but Cassie doesn't like fur, and while she says I can get one if I want, I don't want to make her uncomfortable.

I was going to make one myself, but not quite the same. Black leather and a fur facing on the front of the sporran under the tassels. Would such a sporran be acceptable with formal dress?

That style of sporran is called "semi-formal". It's suitable for day wear and also can be worn at the "black tie" level of formality. It's not considered suitable for "white tie" level occasions if you want to get picky. Though for my taste it would be no worse than wearing a full formal fur sporran with cantle for day wear, which you see all the time.

It's a typical daywear sporran...will go with an Argyll jacket when you wear a tie, but I don't think it will go with an Argyll or Prince Charlie jacket and a bow tie (just tell her it's fake fur :rolleyes: )

Tell her that with a formal sporran, only the badger would have to die. With the semiformal, both a badger and a cow would have to die in order to contribute the necessary skins.

Maybe she'd be more comfortable with it if you don't get a full face sporran. It seems that the animal face is what makes most people uncomfortable with a fur sporran.

One day I still want to have a fur sporran custom made where the flap is the animals rear with the tail & rear legs hanging down like tassles. Then when you want to get something from inside you just lift the tail and dig in! :rolleyes:

I agree with you absolutely on this one, Robin. I have a slightly different sporran to yours, from the same 'stable', which I wear with shirt-sleeves or with tweed Argyll jackets.

However, even if I had one in black leather, I could not wear it formally.

Actually, I saw some like that at the Maryland Rennaisance Festival this past summer. It didn't have the rear legs though, but you did have to lift the tail to get into it. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the name of the company.

The only reason this badger is showing her tail is because it is a place-holder for the face (I haven't got the fangs glued into her mask yet.) So, should I put on the back feet backwards, or just wait to put the front feet on with the mask?
